I'm trying to upgrade my PC CPU - I currently run a CYrix PR166+ on my Abit SM5A SOCKET7 motherboard.

I've been advised that the top CPU it can take is an INTEL 233 MMX.

Thinking it would be equivalent I bought a second hand Cyrix 233 MX but it doesn't run. Am i right in now thinking that this chip needs a SUPER Socket 7 (and so I'm stuffed)?

Or could it be something else?

Did you change the jumpers on your motherboard to allow for the new CPU, the info will be in your mobo book, any problems then just post back and the guys and gals will all help out.

Mind you, the cyrix 233 is not designed to run at 233mhz. It's a marketing ploy really. 233 is the rating that cyrix gives the chip, not the speed. The chip actually runs at around 200.

This may or may not pertain to your problem, but it's handy when buying cyrix stuff.

WELCOME ju.hunt Super 7 not needed in your case. Those Mboards offer the Bus Speed in excess of what you are needing. All that is needed for you to do is set the correct jumpers for the Vcore, multiplier, and Bus Speed for the CYRIX 233MX. As yawningdog said the figure 233 is misleading. This CPU can run at 166, 187, or 200 depending how the jumpers are set. (These are true CPU speeds) Visit the ABIT Website if you don't have a manual for your Mboard. For a CPU speed of 200 use a multiplier of 3x, Bus Speed of 66, and a Vcore of 2.2-2.5 and you should be in luck.

hi

thanx for the tips

unfortunately my Abit mo'board uses soft switchging to reset voltages, bus speeds etc via the BIOS. Since the computer doesn't boot I can't get to this stage to reconfigure the cpu settings

jason

is there a way around this problem?

Jason give this a shot.... Install your original CPU, remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes (have a brew) and allow CMOS to clear itself. Re-install the battery and see if things will boot up. Luck.

Got it sorted.

The Cyrix GXm chips required their own motherboards and arenot compatible with ordinary Socket7 slots

Took me hours of trawling the net and some help from someone at ABit to sort it out!

Perhaps I'll get a powerleap upgrade?

Too expensive for the benefit's reaped. A Socket A Mboard and an AMD CPU for a few more bucks. That's more Bang for your Buck.
Just my 2 dong. (that's cents in RVN).
BTW--THX for getting back with what you've found.
