hello everyone, I am attempting to build my first PC, this is what I have bought from e-bay 1.33GHz (1333MHz) AMD Thunderbird with 266MHz Front Side Bus
256MB Micron or Samsung DDR PC2100 Memory
Thermaltake Aircooler Heatsink & Fan
ECS K7VTA3 VIA 8366 Chipset Mainboard(The Latest from ECS for DDR). 5 PCI and 1 4X AGP Slot.
Mainboard support DDR Memory
56K V.90 Fax/Voice/Modem
LAN Network Capability Onboard
AC97 Audio Codec Onboard , it will arrive any day now from the U.S Now i believe it has sound on board, I have a HD and CD, so will need to buy a graphics card, and floppy, and a case, what power supply will it need, and what case is best, what about another fan, when its all assembled do I have to configure anything. Oh another thing is I will need to get all the leads and screws and things, do cases come with runners for cd and floppy already installed, any help or suggestions will be avidly read, I am going to a computer fair tommorrow, Sunday, and hope to buy what I need then. Thanks for your time.

Congrats on what sounds like a killer system.

A 250-300w power supply should be fine. An extra fan might be wise, considering your investment. Your case, as long as its new in the box, should come with all necessary hardware and cables. I recommend the Aopen KF 45. It's roomy and I'm hamfisted. I'm sure there will be lots of configuration involved, both of hardware and software. You'll have to talk to someone else about video...not exactly my specialty.

Good luck and post back if you have problems. (In the correct forum, of course.)

I see that you're in the UK , here is a site I use all the time for getting new bits of Kit http://www.pcindex.co.uk/

Thought about getting a DVD Rom ?
For a system of that spec ( very similar to mine , I have an Asus A7M mobo ) try and get the best graphics card you can afford , at least a Geforce2 Pro or Ultra . Geforce3's are coming down in price all the time so maybe thats an option worth looking at .
Make sure you get a case with at least a 300W PSU , Athlons are hungry beasts ! . I would also get at least 2 case fans , one sucking in air in the front and one blowing out hot air at the back .

Good luck and have fun !

Some instalation recommendations:

If the heatsink has thermal tape applied, remove it and use a thin layer of heatsink compound instead.

It is usually easier to install the memory while the board is out of the case. Place the motherboard on the anti-static foam sheet or bag on a firm surface for support. I also press a card into the PCI sockets at this time so that less pressure is needed when the installing cards after the motherboard is installed.

Use the fiber washers, in the hardware kit, between the metal mounting posts and the motherboard. Only install a metal mounting post in locations that match a hole in the motherboard. Use the nylon posts (if included) in the remaining holes for additional support. Depending on the type, you may need to cut off the peg end if there is no matching hole in the case.

Install just the memory, video card, and heatsink/CPU before the first power-up. If you see BIOS info, then power down and install remaining devices one at a time: floppy drive, hard drive, then the CD drive.

Thank you for your replys folks, I went to the comp fair but it looked like a junkyard,,so much rubbish. Any way so its a 300w case, and a g-force graphics card, i think i'll fit a new cd drive as opposed to dvd cos I cant see me using a dvd rom, also the recordable ones are on the market and when the price drops (considerably)I may get one. Thanks for the link zimfun the site is new to me and looks very interesting, well hoping the mthbrd comes this week and I can get started, if I end up knee deep in screws and washers and other unidentfiable bits I hope you will spare me some of your time again.-- ps I still dont know for sure if a packard bell win 98se disk can be installed on a different PC????
So thankyou, Yawning dog, zimfun and Reid.

I think the Hewlett Packard discs only work on their brand of PC. I'm not sure if it is with all of them, but the one that I had required it to be a Hewlett Packard.

Good Luck, Joe

As to the Packard-Bell disk working.....probably not, most of the disks that come with off the shelf PCs are setup only to work with the brand/model machine they came with.
