Gday Again,

After my previous post "open to Opinions", some price drops and a little more searching I am almost ready to bite to bullet and buy all my components for my new machine.

Keeping in mind that it is going to be primarily a gaming machine based on the Gigabyte GA 7DXR MB and 1.4 Tbird C with a TnT2 32meg AGP video card (geforce 2 or 3 comming), What is the operating system of chioce for game performance and compatibility etc?

98se? ME? 2000pro?

Not wishing to throw the cat among the birds, but WinXP should give you the best of both worlds. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

in my opinion 2000 is excellent in my book it scores excellent aplication performance over all but does not live up to 3D-graphics like windows/ME i know i'll get a lot of feed back on this becouse ME does not play well with software likes to play alone.ALIENWARE makes great gamers an for some reason they love W/ME???

I would stick with 98 because its proven to work with all games.

ME doesn't like some older games like Half-Life.

Win2k still reports itself as "NT" and so some older games where the installer checks for "NT" won't install.even though the game would work on the system

I have ME,NT4 and Win2k on my home system. I have to switch to a different OS depending on what game I want to play. All this trouble because rather than install 98 (like I should have ) I installed ME then I had to installed these other OSes in an attempt to play the games ME wouldn't, like Aliens one of my favs. (Its faster for me to just install another OS then to start all over.)

I don't have any first hand knowledge of XP (not yet) so I can't offer any comment there.

I'm not a gamer, so Windows 2000 is the "best" operating system for me, but I still keep a Win98 partition for smooth DVD video (and also for the ablility to make bootable floppies). If a gamer needs to buy an OS today they should get Win98, for the reasons previously mentioned.

Before Win2k was released, MS was hyping it as melding the multimedia capabilities of Win98 with the stability of NT. That never really happened, but now with XP (scheduled for release in October) MS is saying "this time we mean it!". XP (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/news/default.asp)

Alot of people fail to relaize that games were coded for the W95 kernel( win98 is just a revised edtion of 95 ). So when you try to run it on w2000 ( which is a revised NT kernel ) you get the compatiblity probs; but it can be tweaked so they'll work.

Xp's vaunted " compatibility " is nothing more than a " rollback " for the game in question, you tell XP to emulate 98 to run the game properly-something MAC users have been doing for years with MS apps.

If you want Maximum game performance just create a dual boot-get at least a 40GB HD, split it 20/20. Run W98se on one for gaming and run W2000 on the other for business needs. I use a similar setup, just remember to set the W2000 format as FAT32, or your W98 won't be able to acces any files on it.

AK,

I respect all of the previous posts, but I would side with the Win98 advocates. I've used all flavors of Windows (except XP) and I have found 98 to be the best all round choice for general computing, i.e. home use, gaming, etc. Best of all it seems to be better documented and versatile than the other offerings (compatibility, USB, etc.).

Just my "two cents worth of advice"!

Good luck,
ER

I should have made my opinion more clear by writing: "MS is saying "this time we mean it! No, really, trust us! We know what is best for you!"". http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks all, sounds like I will go with 98 for the moment and then see what XP offers in the future.

Thanks again for the input, greatly apreciated.

Hey downunder,
I think most of the folks who posted favorable leanings towards Windows 98, meant, or assumed Windows 98SE (second edition). It worked out some bugs and, I think is clearly better than the first edition.
Maybe that is obvious to you, but in reading the posts,....eh?
Or am I mistaken,... wouldn't be the first time
