mb: Intel D945PLRN
cpu: Pentium D940 3.2GHz dual core
memory: 2x512MB 533MHz
hdd: Seagate Baracuda 250GB SATA II
graphic: Asus EAX1600PRO 256MB
dvd-rw: Pioneer DVR-111
case & power: Asus 360 watts

problem is
i have an old hdd but not so old year or something,Western Digital 80GB it is IDE drive wich support ultra dma 5
i put him like slave on one ide flat cable (first i removed dvd-rw)

BIOS doesnt recognize this WD 80GB, but when XP is up this hdd is there and i can work with him but when i start to coping from him to new one it is so slow, why? because use PIO mode
and problem is i cant change to DMA,nor from BIOS or any other settings
tried to update BIOS and done that easily,
now BIOS recognize WD 80GB but system dont want to boot
tried to set drive order and boot configuration without success

anyone can help with this? or to buy new motherboard

thanks!

So, you've set the boot order to boot to the SATA 250GB drive first? Try disconnecting the 80GB drive and see if it will boot up correctly to the SATA drive since your BIOS flash.

You removed the DVD drive from the cable...what position was it in? Was it the master or slave drive on the channel? Did you set the jumpers on the WD drive accordingly? Did you enter BIOS and detect the drive or just let it go with the 'autodetect' or lack of autodetect?

dvd-rw was set master

i was set WD like slave
i was enter BIOS (old one 9 november 05),and WD wasnt there, but XP recognize him
and work only with PIO

then i update BIOS with new one (april 06) and BIOS recognize WD normal but system dont boot

BIOS for this mortherboard is bad
check this, http://downloadmirror.intel.com/df-support/10451/ENG/SN_0072_ReleaseNotes.pdf

so many fixes and so simple that is no good

PROBLEM SOLVED!

@mjc
man BIG thanks! ;)
you gave me idea, i try everything, and finally this combination work!

set dvd-rw like master, and WD jumper set for cable select (CS) - on same IDE cable
now BIOS recognize all drives
system boot normal
XP configured Seagate and WD for Ultra DMA 5 (100mb/s), DVD-RW for DMA 4

only remain that intel (bios not always fine) not always 100% good (probably and microsoft)
