I've done some of the homework involving upgrading my CPU from a PII to a PIII (motherboard support, bios flash, etc.)

I have a Pentium II 450. I want to upgrade to a Pentium III 550 (katmai). It is the fastest PIII that is supported by my slot 1 motherboard (BCM qs440bx).

As far as the physical part of the installation, is that as simple as pulling the Pentium II chip off the motherboard and pressing the Pentium III chip down in its place, or could there be more to it than that? (i.e., changing jumper settings, etc.)

You'll have to set the jumpers for the system bus multiplier in order to get the CPU to run at the correct frequency, i.e. if the system bus is 100Mhz, then the correct multiplier would be x5.5. If you have the motherboard documentation, it would tell you the jumpers to open and which to close. If you're really lucky, it will be on the motherboard itself.

Be careful to ground yourself when removing and installing the CPUs. Touch the case chassis to rid yourself of static.

Cheers,

Supa Dupa.

In addition to what Supa Dupa posted you will probably need to adjust the core voltage jumper as well for the Katmai. Your settings may be in the bios too.

Don't forget the heatsink/fan for the cpu http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
