MS is ending their special extended support phase today July 11, 2006. No MS support or updates going forward for these older OSes. Vendors will likely be no longer providing drivers or support either.

Well, I guess it is time to burn all your drivers to CD (past time actually) and wipe/reinstall if you insist on still running it for any kind of 'serious' work.

Of course there are plenty of alternatives (http://iso.linuxquestions.org/search.php?what=distros&orderby=distro_name) that will run quite well on those machines...

I'm fine with my oldre PC on 98SE. It has 256mb RAM, 550MHz...1GB master, 20gb slave.

I'd put XP, but...meh. It turns me off.

I have been thinking about extending the life of these old PCs by installing Linux, guess it is time to get started.

The number of distros is amazing...including many specialized ones (music editing, video editing, firewall), heck there are even ones to setup a Beowulf cluster.

Just because a machine is a 9x machine doesn't mean it is now dead...just wouldn't want it runing around on the 'Net or for any 'serious' work if it still has an M$ OS on it...
