I have a friend who asked me if he can update his Pentium III 500 in a
Compaq machine (model 5735). He wants to go to a Pentium III 866 or higher. He said it was a slot 1 processer in the machine. Can it be updated at all (since it's a Compaq)? I told him they do make slot to socket converters.

It depends on whether or not he can change things like the core voltage (if he can't then he is limited to processors that have the same voltage as he currently is using, basically does it support Coppermine chips?), Compaqs are difficult to find that info for but rummaging through their tech support/FAQs/help pages may offer up some info...

My reply is a hesitant yes. I don't recommend slot/socket adaptors but the slot 1 can accomodate processors as fast as 800mhz, maybe more. I think I remember slot 1 PIII machines at 900mhz now that I think of it.

If you have some time, check out http://www.evergreennow.com . If you know the specs of the machine or if you have Sandra (Or you can DL their diagnotsics utility) you can find out if they have anything that might suit you.

I, unfortuantely, have an old Presario which is indeed UN-upgradable.

Best of luck to you.

Respectfully, Cory

Hey CLTEK - which presario?

I been around the block with Compaq support people on my
Presario 5220 - I wanted to up the cpu to 500 mhz, as well
as add in a Geforce 2 MX400 Pro video card. I have to find
out more on the motherboard - so I can upgrade the power
supply to 250 watts like the video card requires.

It's like pulling teeth, and getting answers sideways with
the Compaq people. A search of their forums has rendered
little useful info in regards to the 5220 model.

Also, I bought the unit at Comp-USA, and they are just as
unhelpful as Compaq? Is it just the name thats similar? Not!
