Hi,
I am desperately looking for some help with a basic home network set up problem.
I have 2 desktop PCs both running XP (with SP2). I have long wanted to connect them so that I can share the single internet connection I have as well as sharing files between them and printers etc.
I recently purchased two Conceptronic 54Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 adaptors, which I understand can be used to create an “ad-hoc” client-to-client connection between the 2 PCs without the need for a router. I have installed a USB adapter on both and with very little configuration on my behalf I have found that the PC without the internet connection now has shared access to the internet without any problems.
My problem comes with the file sharing/networking bit. Quite frankly, I do not know if I have to create a network in order to start file and printer sharing and my attempts to date are proving very frustrating.
Under “My Network Places” I have tried “Set up a wireless network for a home or small office”, which leads me to a message saying that the “Depending on the software running on this computer, the wireless network setup wizard might not work. See article 871122 in the microsoft knowledge base”.
Under “My Network Places” I have also tried selecting “View Workgroup Computers” for which it tells me that the network name (SSIB) I have given is “…not accessible and that I might not have permission to use this network resource. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available”
Under “My Network Places” --> “Add a Network Place” --> “Microsoft Windows Network”, I can browse and see my workgroup but not the PCs in it.
So I suppose my question is this: To file and printer share, what steps should I take or how should I be trying to configure my PCs? If I have to create a network first for this ad-hoc client-client connection, how do I do it? I have marked various files as “Share this folder on the network” under the “Sharing and Security tab in Explorer. There is obviously some sort of connection between my PCs because they are simultaneously sharing the internet connection without problems. Furthermore, where should I be looking to see the other PC - will it appear under "My Computer" or will it appear under "My Network PLaces" or somewhere else?
If you can shed any light on what I should be trying to do, I would be eternally grateful.
Thank you
