I downloaded a file via a P2P program and when I accessed the file I got a message saying 'NO ADMIN RIGHTS' and then it just closed. I thought nothing of it and deleted the file but now whenever I try to access ANYTHING on my computer I get the following problem:

I tried going into control panel to see if I could sort it out from there and when clicking on any of the icons I get the following message:

This seems to be a really big problem because not only can I not access anything (firefox is the ONLY execption for some reason), I deleted the file but the effects still seem to be there.

I can't access Cmd, regedit or msconfig via 'Run' anymore either, I get the same problem. I can't even restore to a previous date because it just asks me which program I want to use to open it. I'm really stuck for what to do, I've never encountered this problem before.

I can't access any antivirus/adware/spyware programs either.

Ahh! Not good...

What program do you use for antivirus? I would suggest downloading Portable ClamWin (http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/antivirus/portable_clamwin) and seeing if it will let you run that. If it does, then update it and scan!

Also, backup any files you want to keep right now since you can't predict what might happen. And welcome to the PC Guide Discussion Forums!

A) Thank you very much for your quick reply, I can tell this forum is going to be helpful! I posted the same problem over at majorgeeks forum this morning and now it's just gone midnight and still no reply... 150 views but no reply!

B) I can't install ANYTHING, when I click the installation wizard all I get is that box asking me which application I want to use to open it with.

C) I've NO idea whatsover how to back things up, it's not really something I'm familiar with as I've never done it in the past.

How much data is on the hard drive and can you afford to lose it.

Get the portable clam win as instructed above. You will need to do this on a clean PC and bring it to the infected pc.

Also, please go back to MajorGeeks and let them know that you are receiving help... There are a very small number of trained helpers compared to the number of people needing help... when you post in multiple forums, there is a strong possibility that you will end up having several people wasting time on a problem you are already receiving assistance with...

It would also be a good idea to download and run HijackThis, but you may need to rename it for it to work...

To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one
you create like C:\HJT or the Desktop. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if
you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open
your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items
are either benign or essential to the computer.

Name it something like scabfighter.exe and see if you can run a scan so that you can post it here...
