Gateway 300s belongs to friend. The power button being depressed would result in the led blinking and the fan moving slightly. I ordered a replacement power supply acording to conventional wisdom installed the new power supply and have exactly the same problem. Please Advise TIA

only times i've seen this happen it was in fact a bad PSU. only other thing i could see it being is something on the motherboard seeing that you are using a totally new PSU and cords that go into the motherboard. is it under warranty or did you have to buy the PSU? could you try a PSU from another machine that you know works? that would confirm this for you.

Try replacing the CMOS battery with a CR2032 button cell battery. Also, clear the CMOS using the jumper or by taking the battery out for 30 minutes or so.
Then, take everything off the motherboard so you only have CPU & heatsink, PSU, and nothing else. Try to start up--you should get some type of beep code. If you get a beep, add in the Video (if it isn't integrated) and retry. Then add the RAM, and test. Keep going until something causes it to hang. The last thing you added is causing the problems.
Also, what was your friend doing at the time of the problem?
