View Full Version : IE6 Anygood?
I am currently using Internet Explorer 5.0. My web surfing is just average everyday stuff. Should I upgrade to IE6.0? Is IE 6 worth the trouble?
If you are using 5.0 then you will not be able to get the most recent security patches....but I and probably several others here would probably agree, 6 has less support for some things (like Netscape style plugins, and java) and is downright buggy on its own. So if update you must then go with 5.5 SP2, plus there are several alternate browsers you could try.

I agree with Both MJC and iisbob
I have IE6 unwillingly . And Don’t care for it..
If you are using IE5 I would also suggest finding IE5.5 somewhere or using an alternative Browser

Right on Mjc,iisbob and Rick,
Go for an alternative browser,
Try, Crazy Browser at crazybrowser.com, though it runs on IE engine it offers multiple benefits, with better searching capabilities, multiple browser windows etc !It's a clone of Netcaptor.
It's available at a great price. FREE!

if it ain't broke- don't fix it!
furthest I went up to in win98se was 5.5, I had heard too many bad things about IE6....
now however from the native install of winXP it was included and has worked fine.

Right, sea, most of the problems seems to stem from the upgrade version........and even from updates to that!

It's fairly obvious what I think of IE6 - but it would be interesting to know of any (non-XP) upgraders who have been happy with it and been trouble free. I just wonder if people are careful enough about disabling running software first and then rebooting after installing upgrades. One of the problems of installing the downloads direct may well be that the existing IE is kept running and interfering; just a thought.
Yoda I also had some bugginess with the dual browser setup at first and it could be an opera bug - I don't know. What I have done is to not allow either browser to be the default by choice when prompted. Then after Opera was installed I went back to the IE settings and reset the web settings on the Programs tab; also Opera is setup to mimic IE on the web.
I find having two browsers installed is useful; if only to check if a website is malfunctioning due to me or to them! Like yesterday - here!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I just have to add my two pennyworth at this point.
Paul I have been using IE6 on Windows 98SE since it became available. I have had NO problems with it at all,and everyone saying that it's c*** has puzzled me. I can't be the only one who has got it to work can I? The only times it has misbehaved can be traced to rubbish HTML and so on.

David Good to know that someone has been wearing their lucky rabbit's paw! And hope it stays that way too. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I suppose we tend only to hear about problems. But it has been fairly phenomenol the number of problems posted here, on IE newsgroups and amongst friends. The real real problem is that once any IE6 bugs do set in, they can be impossible to recover from without reinstalling etc - there doesn't seem to be a quick fix.
I suspect that M$ developed it to coincide with and be integrated within XP, when it was launched; that this was rushed and that not enough testing had been done with upgrading it on other platforms.
Since you have a trouble-free installation it would be nice to know what features it has that would tempt anyone to upgrade. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Paul It actually came on a magazine cover disc, and while installing another program, I clicked on the wrong link! It was easier to corry on and install than try and stop it!

BG,
I'm afraid of upgraiding all the stuff that M$ is suggesting. A good advice: wait and see. You don't even upgrade your lady every year ?
It's hard but it's the truth. I've in the past always done the upgrades of M$ but after a while i've discover that upgrading not always satisfy your wishes.
Why upgrade to explore 6.... ?
Can someone please says the advantage of upgrading ?
Hans.

Just my 2¢ also
I have IE6 ( clean install of XP )
not so much as a hickup
much easier and better at handling cookies
I also have IE5.01 on a 98SE machine and it runs smooth as well...
no intention of upgrading it

I have IE6 clean install in Win XP and IE6 upgraded from 5.5 in Win ME on both my PCs and haven't had any problems from any of the four installs. I think the reason for not having problems is it is the first windows update that I install even before the critical updates.

I have noticed that there seem to be fewer problems with the XP installed version. Aside from one critical update that was causing some problems of its own a few weeks back....it seems the best way to get the IE6 "experience". I think for a 9x system 5.5 is probably the best version (although some are having better luck with 5.01....), for a Win2k....it is a toss up...

I'm using win98se and decided to upgrade to IE 6.0 including the service pack the microsoft website recommended.
Here's what I've found so far...
Just the slightest of stickiness to the gui when, for example, I'm playing a mp3 while moving file(s) from one folder to another. Before IE6 I never noticed it happening.
Real Player suddenly coughed up illegal operations so I had to unistall it and reinstall to fix it. No problems since.
A more dramatic change has been to my connection speed which suddenly became faster after I installed the new browser. I don't know if the two are related. Before IE6 I was averaging 10500Bps...after IE6 I was at 11900Bps and holding. Strange...
That's about it. Overall I'm pleased but we'll see what happens with the gui. If it gets worse then I'll probably turf IE6 or maybe try more ram (when the prices come back down). Maybe other problems will arise in the future but so far things seem to be ok.

I have used both IE 5.5 and 6 with no problems. Only reason to upgrade was like the old adage says, "because it was there".
Yes I am a compulsive upgrader.
To date I am very pleased with both and as long as it’s free so to speak, I'll probably continue to use them. I also have played around with Opera and found it to be a good browser. My only complaint with Opera was that it was a bit quirky to get used to after using IE for so long.
Good luck,
ER

When I installed IE6 on my Win2K system, Java quit working. It was hellishly painful and time consuming to "uninstall" IE6 because the normal Add/Remove programs wouldn't work. Basically I had to gut my system registry, some system files, etc., re-install Win2K, and finally re-install IE5.01.

I paid $10 to have MS send me IE6 on CD. Since then, I have downloaded all security patches. I'm running IE6 on four computers with no problems whatsoever. Maybe I'm lucky? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Real men use Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org), the greatest, bestest web browser known to man. Like Opera, but without ads, runs on Gecko, the fastest web renderer, and is 100% free and open source! Get it today! Skip IE in favor of Mozilla. I get angry anytime I use any browser other than Mozilla. If you just surf the web, get Kmeleon (http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net). Its a lightweight Mozilla build.

IE is Mozilla, and so is Netscape-they are variations on the original Mozilla design.
Open your registry and navigate to the IE keys and you'll see it's core name is " Mozilla ".
Opera is a Completely differently built browser, with it's own engine.
