I used Panda antivirus for a couple of years and it worked great. This year when I resubscribed it became this bloated program that would make the computer take upwards of 7 minutes to boot up or shut down. I deleted as much of the program as I could but it refuses to be completely deleted. My problem is now when I boot up (I am now using Avast) I get a message that says my computer contains a sample of kuang2 in the pavdll.dll file of panda software. The only other problem that I can find to date is that Windows Media Player will not work properly. It loads a song and goes through the motions but there is no sound. How serious is this? How do I delete both the virus and Panda? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, G

I have been thinking about this over night and I am wondering if Avast is keying on a left over virus definition from the Panda Titanium antivirus that I was running. The message I ges says that I have sample of kuang2 in the pavdll.dll file of Panda. Could my problem really be that i just can't delete Panda? That program just refuses to go away. It is unlikely that Panda had a sample of kuang unless you were infected with kuang... It is also not likely that Panda slowed down the way that you described unless something was seriously wrong with your computer already... It is not that bloated... This means that to help you we are going to need to see a HJT log and probably some other logs...

To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one
you create like C:\HJT or the Desktop. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if
you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open
your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items
are either benign or essential to the computer.

Did you actually uninstall Panda or did you just delete the folder?? If you simply deleted the folder, the best solution right now would be to reinstall it and then remove it properly either using the uninstall it provides or Add/Remove Programs... We can try to ferret out all of the little pieces and remove it, but that will not be as thorough as letting it uninstall properly...

I have uninstalled using add/remove programs and it refused to be deleted. I have no doubt that I have gotten part of it but I have read that Panda is a bear (get it?) to remove. If you think I should reinstall and try a delete, I will. Thanx for the response, G
I have just now tried add/remove programs and also gone to the program files on c drive and selected all and attempted to delete from there. I get a message that says access is denied. G

Okay, enter the following into the command prompt (Start > Run > type cmd):

sc delete PAVFIRES
sc delete PAVFNSVR
sc delete Pavkre
sc delete PavProt
sc delete PavPrSrv
sc delete PAVSRV

Then open a HJT scan and put checks by:

I might add one more thing...the line
023-service Panda anti-virus service (PAVSRV).....Antivirus 2005\pavsrv 51.exe
refuses to be eleminated in HJT. That is to say I did a scan and that was the only Panda related line in the scan and I checked the box to eleminate it but it is still there.

Then close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...

Then reboot to Safe Mode (tap F8 just before Windows starts to load and select Safe Mode) and try again to delete those folders... Run HJT and make sure those items are gone... If not, fix them again...

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and update on how things went...

BINGO! Frankly I feel like an idiot. I had emailed Panda with no response several times and have beed disgusted with it for quite some time. It never occured to me to look for something this simple. Budfred, I thank you a thousand times for taking the time to help me. I am doing a thorough scan with Avast now to be sure that the complete removal of Panda has also removed the Kuang2. The thorough scan will probably take all night at the rate that it is going now. I will post again when the scan is completed. I never would have figured this out for myself.

Where is it finding it?

While doing the scan with Avast, I am prompted to transfer the infected file to the "chest". The scan log gives me the message "Error occured during moving files to the chest" I actually seem to have 2 viruses. The files in the Avast log read as follows:

Try running a couple of online virus scans and see if they pick it up... The one in Recycler is probably not a problem, but the other one may be... Did you try going to it and deleting it?? You can use the Housecall scan from my links and here are a couple of good scans to download and run....

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.


Please download, install, and update Ewido anti-spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)


Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Close ewido. Do not run it yet.


Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.


In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.

Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.

Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).

Restart back into Normal Mode.


Please perform another scan with Hijack This, and then post back with a copy of the Ewido log and the new HijackThis log.

I am trying HouseCall again....it doesn't seem to do anything. I have tried using a different kernel, same results. I have had it supposedly running for 1/2 hour and I see no indication of an actual scan. Their web site is quite understandable, the program just seems to sit idle. Any suggestions? Thanks again, G

I don't know what you mean about using a different kernal... If Housecall is not working, there are other scans you can use such as Bitdefender in my links and...

Try running an MWavScan... It will produce a log in the lower window that has the bad list and you will need to use Ctrl-C to copy it and then paste it here for review.... If the list is extremely long, you can just paste the lines that begin with the word "File" since those are the ones we need to be most concerned about...

It will suggest that you buy the product to fix what it finds, but that is not necessary... Just post the bad part of the scan and we will deal with it...

just for the heck of it I ran an Avast thorough scan again and this time it was able to pick up Kuang2 and deposit it into the virus chest. Now what? I am not sure how to delete it from this point. Where do I go from here? 1000 thanks again! G

I don't use Avast, so I don't know how to clean out its quarantine, but it should be able to tell you in Help if you can't just find the option in a dropdown menu...

I did run MWAV and generated a log for it but I didn't post it because Avast seems to have captured the Kuang2. I never could seem to get Housecall to run at all. This has certainlybeen an education. It took 3 thorough scans before Avast was able to capture it. I'll look at the Avast help files and report back. Thanks again, Budfred

The list of bad items should not be that long and will be in the lower window of the scan results... The upper window covers essentially every file on your computer, so that is not helpful...

you can just paste the lines that begin with the word "File" since those are the ones we need to be most concerned about...The key word here is "begin"... The lines we need to see start with the word "File"...

The actual beginning of each of those lines is "Entry" and we don't need to worry about them... The "Files" comes from the "Program Files" that is part of the path noted in the line... If you don't have any that actually begin with File, I think you are okay...
