Hi, I'm just curious and I would like some professional
opinions concerning Hard Drive brands. Which are the
best and why?

Personally I've had great experiences with the Maxtor
5400, both 30GB and 40GB versions and I have had
some trouble with the Quantum Digital 5400, 10GB. It's
loud and is prone to shutting off randomly.

Thanx,

MangMang

I Have 1 Maxtor 30Gig 7200 , 2 IBM 30-7200 , and 1 IMB 60-7200
So far the IBM drives are cooler and more reliable that the Maxtor

deal with 2 companies (Local) for most of my OEM hardware.
I don’t need tech support . So why pay for it?

IBM 40-7200 sells for $122
Maxtor 40-7200 sells for $148

IBM 60-7200 sells for $150
Maxtor 60-7200 sells for $209

I know with a little effort I can find the Maxtor drives for less.
But Less than the IBM?
I’ll spend the Little extra for the IBM and Not add more Heat to a system that is already running 4 cooling fans.

BTW for the price of the Maxtor 5400 drives Just subtract $40 from each

Wow, great prices.

I actually just bought my Maxtor at the Canadian Computer show in Toronto and for some reason our pricing seems to be reversed on this side of the border.

(canadian prices)

IBM 5400 40GB = $175-$225
MAXTOR 5400 40GB = $134-$150

(prices depend on vendor)

I don't remember the 7200s just because I wasn't shopping for those. I was just buying a slave drive and I like the low sound that 5400 makes.

Thanx for the input,

MangMang

Here’s the Link to one of the Suppliers I use. http://www.kdcomputers.com/

Unfortunately they Do Not ship outside of the US http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
I drive the 25 miles to their shop instead of using the one two blocks away from the house.

Hey,

My two cents worth is that over the years I have used Seagate, Western Digital and Maxtor (Quantum) harddrives.

Right now, in one of my machines, I'm running a Quantum Fireball 30gig 7200 drive. It seems to throw off a lot of heat compared to the Western Digital with the exact same specs.

In my opinion, as far as dependability, I would rank in order from best to worst: Seagate, WD, Quantum. Or, maybe it's Quantum, then Western Digital, but by far the most reliable drive I have seen is the Seagate.

I have never used an IBM harddrive. It seems to me they are a bit on the expensive side. I suppose you probably get what you pay for, but I tend to want as much as I can get for the least amount of money, hence the purchases of WD and Maxtor.

Maybe someday I will purchase an IBM and see what all the hubbub is about. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Cheers,

Hey Rick, do you remember the transfer rates on those?

IBM 60-7200 sells for $150
Maxtor 60-7200 sells for $209

I have the Maxtor 60 GB UATA 100 at home, running on a P-100 controller card, I paid 209 for that. To me, it sounds like the IBM is prolly a UATA 66.

Thanks man.

I 've always gotten exceptional service from Maxtor, WD, IBM and fujitsu, had a few problems with Seagate-Quantum was recently bought out by Maxtor.

I doubt you'll have any problems with modern drives, unlike the old days when you had to cross your fingers just about every time you turned the system on, reliability has tripled in all latest drives that i've seen, so it's pretty much just up to your personal choice now-any of these companies make great drives now.
