View Full Version : CD-ROM drive on both IDE channels?

This continues my post on replacing the CD Drive.
It looks like my hard drive occupies both primary and secondary channels. Why would that be? I removed the broken CD drive physically and from the configuration, so I can't check where it was. My new CD drive is going to be jumpered as slave, by default.
According to the PC Guide, it would be better to put it as Master on the secondary drive.
Of course, I can install it as slave and let Windows 95 do the job, but would it not be better to put it separetly? I only have these two drives, HD and CD.

Would you explain what you mean that it "looks like your HDD occupies both IDEs?" Where are you seeing that information?

You certainly can set the CD as the Secondary Master. If by default it is jumpered as Slave you would need to follow the directions that came with it and set the jumpers to Master.

Not a problem if the IDE cable is "keyed" as it will only go on one way. If not be sure that the cable edge with the stripe is aligned with the number 1 Pins. And, be sure to terminate...use the end plug-ins, not the mid connector.

May all your dealings be win/win!

In the IRQ and Input/Output settings of Device Manager, both IRQ 14 and 15 are occupied by the Hard disk controller. Do you see what that means?

The Hard disk controller is the IDE controller and doesn't necessarily control just a hard drive...IDE1 (first IDE channel should be IRQ 14) and IDE2 should be IRQ 15...the hard drive it slef shouldn't have an IRQ , neither should th e CD...just plug it into the secon IDE connector on the motherboard and set it to autodetect in the BIOS and then boot up...Windows should find it and all should be well.
