Hi troops,

I got a big problem with my laptop which runs on Windows ME and Pentium III. Everytime I turn it on, it as expected goes through the normal booting process. The problem is when the booting process is completed, my laptop displays what look like a safe-mode window with the cursor no where to be found. As a result, I am unable to do anything apart from carrying out the ctrl, alt and delete process as an alternative way of shutting down the whole system. On another positive note, everything functions normally when I open in the real safe mode. The cursor is there to move around.

As a result of this problem, my dvd drive cannot run any dvd even in the real safe mode. Also, I cannot install any new program unto my laptop.

Please kindly advise. Thanks

 :( :(

OK, go through this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/273738/) and see if you gan get to the win.ini file and copy it over somewhere so you can post it here...

You will also need to grab HijackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html) and get ready to post a log from it...

Once in Safe Mode...
If you go to "Start->Run->msconfig->Diagnostic Startup->"Normal" mode at restart" you should find that your optical drives are available and will work.

It's good to work with your optical drives in this environment if you are experiencing any kind of problem with the working of the drives.
Reason being it's a minimalist environment; no programs running in the background to interfere. no firewall or internet connection [switch off the modem].

Thank you all

Everything is fine now: I re-installed the display driver from Device Manager in Display (Control Panel) and restarted the system. Windows in colour looked great again.
