I am very interested in knowing which of the following is the better processor for me. What are the most significant differences. I would like to get a low end system and customize it from there, but choosing the right processor is something I'd like to get advice on.

My system uses: internet, light gaming, cd-burning, low end graphics (nothing like 3d animation). I also want my system to be a part-time server. Want to run windows 2000 pro or windows xp on it. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Go athlon, its the best for the least amount of money. Gett the new ddr boards and processers. Should be the 266 FSB. But if you got the cash, get the new 2.0 gighertz pentium 4, with the the RD ram which runs at 400MHZ as opposed to the athlons 266MHZ.If you get the pentium , youll be paying big bucks, no whammies.

Ok i see you said low end . So go with the durons, others will probably disagree, but personally i would go durons with the sdram. The durons are 200FSB so they will be running at 133MHZ.Sound confusing it is!
But what you said about your needs , i would go duron.

IMO you can't beat the AMD T-Bird/Athalon for the price. It will cover your needs (server and burning will be happier with the more meatier Athlon or Pentium).

As far as the differences...prices, L2 Cache, heat generation etc. Here (http://www.cpuscorecard.com) is a good site to compare diff CPUs.

I use a Duron and love it, but the Athlon has gotten really inexpensive since I built my machine and I would recommend that. The extra cache memory is the difference.

Avoid the p4 like an oncoming train. Diurnal, I'm not sure you knew, but the pc800 rdram is already obsolete. Intel has canned it and is about to release a mobo for the p4 which uses ddr.
