When I try to open IE i'm getting a error code that reads like this:
"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application" Then after clicking on the OK button it returns me back to my desktop.
I'm running XP Pro with SP2, anyone have any ideas on how I can open IE again? I've already tried the "more options" on the operating systems disk and it still dosen't work;

Look for Event Viewer under Administrative Tools on the Control Panel and under the system log, look for the details on that event. You should be able to right click on the even and select Properties to get the details...post them here.

In my Event Viewer I see three lines:
Application Log Application Error Records 512
Security Log Security Audit Records 64.0
System Log System Error Records 512
When I right click on them it, and select properties it brings up a "Systems Properties" dialog box.
If I double click on one it opens a list of things, shows little icons some that say "information" "Warning" and "Error"... I'm not sure what im looking for and what I should post.
thanks for the response,

It would be in the System Log...and it would be one of the errors. There should be enough of it showing to see which ones are your IE errors...post the IE error.
When you click on Properties (or double click that error) you can highlight the error message in the box and then ctrl-C to copy the message...
It will look something like this...
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0xcfc), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
when you paste it here.

When I double click on the "System Log" I also get an error message that reads like this:
Unable to complete the operation on "System". The interface is unknown. Then it gives me a "OK" button to click on.
Think I should just do a reformant...... ahhhhh I don't want to.......lol

Have you been 'tweaking' Services?
This is beginning to sound like a service or two have been disabled...

The computer was given to me over a year ago. I'm not really sure what you mean by me "tweaking services". If I type "msconfig" into the run box I see a service tag there...... is that what you are talking about?
thanks,

Jenn...
Nope...go to Administrative Tools in the Control Panel (or Start Menu...it can be in several places) and click on Services....

Ok I think were getting somewhere. I went to services and clicked "automatic" on a couple of things that were "disabled". No I'm able to get into the "Event Viewer" and this is what I have in there showing with the red error.
Srv has 154 lines of errors
Atapi has 2 lines of errors
Service lines of errorsControl Manager has 101 lines of errors
Browser has 35
I'm assuming to get IE up and running I should be looking at the Browser lines.
All the Browser line errors seem to say the samething. This what they say:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: BROWSER
Event Category: None

Hello.
Try reading THIS (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314872/) It was the only support solution I could find under the Event ID that you posted (8032) I'm not sure how your system was originally setup up and used for being that it was given to you. So let me know if this helps you out.
Good luck :D
Look for more recent items...like anything over the past two or three days. That particular item was over a year old.
Also, for the Services...it would probably be best to look at this list (http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12) and restore them to at least the "Safe" setting, if not the default (Safe should be alright).

Just noticed one other thing. Under the "Windows Component Wizard"
There's a check in the box of Other Network and File and Print Services but it shows 0.0MB. And so do a lot of other things say 0.0MB with the boxes checked. I tried unchecking and rechecking the boxes but still didn't help.

Windows Components Wizard is Add/Remove Programs for parts of Windows...don't worry about any of that for now.

Hey MJC
So I guess with all the updates and changes since then, does that mean event 8032 could now mean different things? I saw the date but didn't realize that it may be useless. Sorry Jennifer :(

Im not sure if or how much the event 8032 has changed. The link that was provided talked about "Print and File shareing" that's why I was checking out my Windows Components Wizard and found out that there is a problem there and was wondering if it could be related
Anyways here's and updated event log, it's pretty much the same as the one that's a year old.
Event Type: Error

No, CP, there error is still likely to be the same, but I wanted to see if it was still happening. Year old errors aren't really much good unles dagnosing a problem that has been that long term.
Since I have to make an airport run in a little while, I probably won't be able to look into this until tonight...

Im thinking since I can't seem to figure out a solution here I would do a reformat but I wanna make sure if I do that it would be fixed when I reloaded windows. Does anyone know if this problem lays maybe in the registry somewhere and a reformat wouldn't fix my problem.
thanks,

Error message: "The application failed to initialize properly" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/217134/en-us).
Do you have a "Sound Blaster" sound card?
It is possible that your errors are coming form the fact that the machine had been hooked up as part of a network.
And the error that you did post isn't really dealing with IE...but network browsing.
Your current network setup is a mess. It looks to be patched together from the previous setup and whatever new connections you made. This is often a rather insecure situation.
My question, when you received the machine was everything preloaded? Did you wipe and reinstall at that time? Do you have the install disk? Is this an off the shelf machine (HP, Dell, etc)? Make/model, etc?

When I received this comp I did a complete reformat. Reinstalled windows, ran the internet sharing with another comp right next too this one.... and networking the two together. The host comp is the one Iv'e been typing from.... but the error message's are coming form the other one. Everything was good for about a year , I may have done something stupid....dunno. Now I can't get IE to launch...... that's all I want to be able to do is launch IE again
thanks for hanging in there with me....
------
Jenn...
Ok...have you changed printers or anything?
Part of the problem, and only part is that the connection sharing seems to be messed up.
I don't think this is the entire problem, but a possible fix requires being able to connect so you can try a different browser and maybe get an install package for IE to try a repair install..that is if you want to continue to use IE.
I would recomend trying FireFox (http://www.mozilla.com/). You will need to download it on a working machine and transfer it over...
Double check the Windows firewall...there was an MS update not that long ago that turned the firewall on, by default.

Actually FireFox is on the comp and I just updated and launced it. I downloaded IE7 beta and it won't launch, I get the same error as I did when I tried to launch IE6.
I'm not a big fan of FireFox so I would still like to be able to get IE going again. Do you think a reformat and reinstall would fix it? I hate to have to do it but everything I've tried isn't working.
thanks,

Hey Jennifer
HERE (http://www.updatexp.com/0xC0000005.html) is another link that has information you might find useful.
About Fire Fox... I think every tech in the world will agree that IE isn't the best browser to use. Fire Fox is more stable, more secure, and works almost the same way. There are a lot of flaws with IE and if you look deeper in the forum you'll find a lot of nightmares pertaining to it.
If you don't find a solution, you can try using Fire Fox of Opera, download all the updates and plug-ins or just try the clean install as you stated. Again good luck and I hope you find a solution.
EDIT: MJC, I just came across several other posts from a couple of sites where the error message Jennifer posted is exactly the same. Although they were running different programs, the problem was that they were using a Virtual Ram Drive. Once it was removed, things cleared up. Does this ring any bells or make sense?
Yes, that link may be useful...
If it is a DEP error, then I think we need to see a HijackThis (http://merijn.org/downloads.html) log...
