How can I tell if my computer takes a pci video card or an agp?

You'll have to open the case, but if the motherboard has an AGP slot, it will be a slot about the same size as a PCI but a little more forward than the PCI (if that makes any sense) It will be the first slot for a card and probably be brown rather than white.

I've looked, there are 3 wite slots at the bottom, the lowest one has my modem plugged into it. but thee doesn't seem to be any other ones except for the slots for ram which are both full. system is a cyrix 6x86mx 216mhz processor. but I dont know what type or make the motherboard is

Appears that you have on-board video and your option for an upgrade would be a PCI solution. You could download a program called Belarc Advisor (free) which will give you details on you system configuration and possibly the make/model of you motherboard. If successful, you could search the manufacturer's web page and check out its specifications. This is available at http://www.belarc.com/Download.html.
Good luck,

Thanks, I'll try the Belarc advisor download and see what happens. I have found out that I do have onboard video, it's a sis 5597 chipset, I definitely need to do something about it as game playing is most unfun.

I have no knowledge to bestow on you but reading this post reminded of my friends problem with his pc. He just bought a ATI All-In-Wonder Radeaon Card (AGP version). Unfortunately, he did not realize that he had a pci slot. Since both are about the same size he managed to insert the AGP card in but of course it would not work. After some troubleshooting he finally realized his problem and he just decided to return the AGP and reinstall the old PCI card. But upon inserting the PCI card he received 3 beeps and he apparently he damaged the slot somehow. So now he has to replace his slot and...well actually I don't know what he's gonna do now but all I know is he is really unlucky.
