Ms is going to push IE7 through the Auto updates when it is finally released, but they have released a blocker that stops this from happening. If you want to load IE7 at a later date manually the blocker will not stop you.

See link below for details and also a link for the blocker download. To download this your OS has to be validated prior to download.

<rant> Great...just !$!@# ^$@#@%, great!

Just what we need, viral installs of Internet Exploder.

Hasn't MS learned anything yet?

If they leave a path open in IE some two-bit slimeball finds a way to exploit it...I can see it now...

Coming to a machine near you...instead IE7..some viral email infects you so instead of getting the update from the official sites, it comes from Crapware-r-us.R..U

Fred,
Checked the wife's XP Pro PC and it was still using IE 6.0, went to Microsoft Updates site and scanned, says no updates available.

Screenshots are easy.

Push the "Print Screen" key at top right of your keyboard, while exactly what you want as the screenshot is in view on the monitor. That copies the desktop to your clipboard.

Open Paint, or other decent graphics program. Most will work. In Paint, click "Edit" in the menu bar, then click "Paste" in the Edit Menu. That will paste the screen image onto the Paint canvas. (You can use [CTRL] + [V] with many programs, but it won't work here, you have to use the "Edit" menu. [CTRL] + [C] will copy, but not for a screenshot. Works great for highlighted text, emails, forum posts, hyperlinks etc though.)

Save it as a JPG or BMP file. I can't remember if Paint will save as JPG, you might have to save it as BMP then open it in another graphics program and save that as a JPG.

There's your screenshot. Pictures posted on the forums must be below a certain file size, I can't remember what the size limit is. When posting a reply you should see a "Manage Attachments" button, that should open a dialog box that will allow you to browse to the picture and add it to your post.

To post larger pictures some of the forum members get an account at a site that allows them to store pictures then post a link to the picture instead. They can help you more with that than I can.

Paint will allow you to save as a JPG--just choose 'JPG' as the filetype when saving the file.

As for hosting, try ImageShack (http://imageshack.us/) or PhotoBucket (http://photobucket.com/).

Fred,
If that is a beta, how did you get it? Did you install any prior betas?

MS is probably doing a limited (forced) release. Like WGA Notification was.

What is it with MS and forcing BETA software on the unsuspecting public??

In my opinion, the beta software (or any program) should NEVER be installed without the user actually clicking the button that says 'click here to install beta version'. There's no way it should be released on the auto-update! The whole point of it being in beta stage is for a small number of users to test it, and for the bugs to be worked out before it is released to the general public.

IE 6 I would never trust to be water-tight at all. Nevermind a beta version of IE 7! It's like using a colander for an umbrella http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

That's the kind of reason I never use automatic updates. I always carefully look through the updates and uncheck the crap.

I hate to even setup automatic updates for customers and friends, but sometimes you have to because you know they won't keep up on the security patches if you don't. :(

The tool is a command line tool.
After unzipping it you will find an htm web page giving instructions. I have zipped these instructions into a folder for you viewing

If you download the tool and for those that are not sure how to use a command line tool do the following:

Unzip the file to a folder on you desktop.
Open a command prompt.
Drag the "IE70Blocker.cmd" file into it.
Click inside the command window and insert the following
/b
You should now recieve comfirmation that it is blocked.

The above zip file also shows the location in the registry for youu to check and see that it has instaled correclty (I have just checked mine and it shows blocked after running tool)

Beats me!.I only use IE when there is absolutely no other way that works!!
I would rather french kiss a king cobra than use IE ..

I have used Opera for probably the past 3 or 4 years, and have only installed Firefox a few days ago to "play" with after hearing you peeps singing it's praises.. :D

Only me and the wife use the pc's and she's so technophobic it's taken me years to get her to reboot the computer if there is a glitch etc!!.

She certainly doesn't install stuff. I can only think it must have come in with the automatic updates, don't see any other way!!..cheeky sods though..

Apparently mjc is not alone in his concerns about MS pushing out IE7 via automatic updates:

From that link...

IE 7 will be delivered in the fourth quarter of this year as a "high priority" update via Automatic Updates in Windows XP

Strange that I have got it now!!! :(

If you just set automatic updates to notify but not automatically install the updates, whats the problem?

Then just un-tick IE7 in the updates and check the don't notify me about this update again...And if you use FireFox whats the problem either way?

The "problem" is...I am not trying to prevent it from dowloading..I already have it on my pc, but I didn't "deliberately" install it!!.

And, as someone already observed, most of us help people with their computers and we know they will simply refuse the updates if they are asked, so we set them to update automatically... It is not a problem for those that really know what they are doing, but it is for the rest of the world....

For what it is worth.
IE7 is back on the update list :(
If you remove the check or hide it .
MS gives the same BS warning about a security update being in the Hide :(

I don't know what is More of a pain.
Having it listed or the annoying warning..

I put it on two systems.
So far.
it crashes during the first time run on both systems.

Then once restarted after a second reboot.
it does it's run once and things getting running.

version 7.0.5730.11

They sure did leave a lot of room for update numbers
How long before they reach 7.9.9999.99

Again see Post #1 in this thread for the "blocker" download or you will be loading IE7 just as soon as MS can pump it down the pipes.

Rick
11-05-2006, 02:08 PM
They are pumping it down the pipes already..

My point is just that.
I don't think it should be there.
Also I don't think it should require a BLOCKER or having to put up with this

Important

You've hidden important updates
You've asked us not to show you one or more high-priority updates but your computer might be at risk until they are installed

Microsoft gets hit from both sides:

They finally launch the first IE update in 5 years because users complain they are having so many "security problems" with IE6 and they tell MS "you have to do something".

Microsoft then pushes the new IE7 to the field and users complain because it "breaks" existing applications, changes fonts in Outlook and other issues.

And of course Microsoft does not yet understand "opt in" for downloads. They know what is right for you.......
