that will depend on the specs on your machine.
can you post your system's specs?

Motherboard:
CPU Type Intel Pentium 4, 2400 MHz (18 x 133)
Motherboard Name Asus P4SD-LA (3 PCI, 1 AGP, 4 DDR DIMM, Audio, Video, LAN)
Motherboard Chipset Intel Springdale-G i865G
System Memory 512 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type AMI (08/27/04)

do you need any more specs?

Please be patient, this is a bulletin board, not a chatroom. Of course you already know that.
I figure Saphalline will be by tonight.
I generally recommend Crucial.com's configurator, it will show you what the specs are for the RAM you have already and the amount you can put into that PC.

You don't NEED to operate in dual channel mode. It is a performance maximizing option. If you have two free slots you can fill them with 2x512 to get 1.5GB of RAM, or replace them with 2x1GB to get 2GB. I wouldn't borhter filling it up with 256MB sticks, though it is possible.
