Probably a registry problem.
I imagine Word trying to retreive instructions from the registry telling it how to do as you have told it [close Word], and failing to find settings that work, or finding settings that don't work [cause a problem].

Which Windows is running when doing this?
The EBCD includes a "Registry Tool" for Win98/ME that scans the registry and fixes problems.

You might try uninstalling and reinstalling Office.

Or you could use "Regmon.exe" [whilst doing the problem activity] to record the registry accesses and see if you can spot what's going wrong, and then fix it [the registry setting or whatever].

Do you have Regmon.exe installed?

If not get it HERE (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Regmon.html).
