Hello BeastofGevaudan, and welcome to the PcGuide forums. :)
If you want to make sure you completely wipe out any data on the drive try this. http://dban.sourceforge.net/
Once that is done just boot from the XP CD and follow the prompts. Make sure your computer is set to boot from CD-ROM and hit any key when it prompts you to "hit any key to boot from CD".

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.
You have two choices:
1) Surgical Repair: Attempt to remove the malware from your system along with the help of the experts here and then fine tune your performance once the system is clean.
2) Nuclear Option: Backup your data, reinstall the OS, reinstall and configure all programs and restore your data.
I can't see going with option two, while option one is viable. You can always try option 2 if option 1 fails.
If you would like to use option 1, please download a copy of Hijackthis. (http://www.subratam.org/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=41) to your desktop. Unzip the program to a permanent folder. Run the program and choose the option to scan and create a log. When notepad opens up, hold the <Ctrl> key down and press A once. Then hold the <Ctrl> key down and press C once. Return to this site and respond to this post. Place your cursor in the box and hold the <Ctrl> key down and press V.
Post the response and wait for your replies.

For future reference you need to download the (CDR/CDRW version.), and burn it to cd as an "image". Then it will be bootable.

"but i was really wanting to delete EVERYTHING"
The easy way to "delete" everything on a partition is just to format the partition.
The files are still on the drive, but the file table [like an index] is blank, so they appear not to be there, and for all practical purposes they are no longer there.
Except that it would be possible to "Un-Format" the partition and recover the files.
If you want to make the files practically impossible to be recovered, then DBN is the thing for the job because it writes multiple patterns of 1's and 0's to the drive.
The problem with this though, is that it takes a long time to complete the job.
A quicker alternative is to just write a single set of zero's.
KILLDISK (http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm) will write a single set of zeros to either the whole HDD, or to any number of chosen partitions, so it takes much less time to complete.
It also nicely displays the partition arrangement on the HDD too.
And it can be burned to various media, including CD.
If you got more adventurous you could add it as just one more of the additional programs on a customised "Emergency Boot CD" [see EBCD link below].
"saved it as a bootable data disc... when i put it in D: ... it doesnt do anything... when i open D: ... there is nothing there..."
There is a special method you need to use; you don't just burn the file to a CD.
Something like "File->Create CD from ISO Image" using a program like "Easy CD Creator".
You can use either a CD-R, or [I prefer] CD-RW.
"all my games and music files are all screwed up, lots of my programs dont work at all."
It's rather drastic to throw everything away though.
Can you really afford to lose everything?
I'm sure that's why classicsoftware is trying to get you to fix all the problems and retain your data.
"wanted to just make it like it was when i first got it in the mail... but ill give this a shot"
Definitely worth a go, and you may find it an interesting experience. :)

You do have a little mess here, I think you can probably avoid the nuclear issue.
Before we start with Hijackthis, I would like to do the following:
Please download, install, and update Ewido anti-spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close ewido. Do not run it yet.
Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.
In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Restart back into Normal Mode.
Please perform another scan with Hijack This, and then post back with a copy of the Ewido log and the new HijackThis log.

meh, i couldnt figure out the DBAN thing anyways lol... plus i was looking at the site and i was kinda second guessing it, people posting on their forums saying that they ran DBAN and then it wouldnt recognize windows XP install disc and wouldnt re-install... as i said im not the most tech savvy guy on earth, and i dont have the cash to have this done professionally... this is my only comp and is only a year old so i would hate to screw it up due to my incompetence.
right now im running disk cleanup, as soon as thats finished i will follow your instructions classicsoftware, which i really appreciate, they have so far been very straight-forward and easy for me to understand. ill get right on this and get back to you guys. thanks again.
and as far as deleting EVERYTHING and restarting from scratch... it wouldnt really kill me, i dont use this comp for work or anything like that. just your basic web-surfing, music, movies, games etc. the thing is, there are 2 other people who use this comp, so i have multiple copies of files all over the place, dead links all over the place, and like i said, several programs just wont work at all, my Dell Musicmatch Jukebox doesnt run anymore, and i dont even know where my windows media player is, i preferred jukebox anyways tho... my simcity doesnt work anymore... and ive all but given up on WoW... i just really want to clean everything up and get it running smoothly like it used to.
i also found my old Norton Anti-virus software. but its 2004, and i dont think i can even use it anymore, im pretty sure thats why i removed it, it kept asking me to renew it... which costs money... i know you guys dont want to hear my life story or anything but im the only person with a job in my house, and im putting my girlfriend through college, so i dont have the cash to do this kind of stuff... thats why i kinda thought my only option was to just wipe out everything and re-start from scratch, but i appreciate all the help and suggestions. and ill get right back to you guys after i follow classicsoftwares instructions.

Here is the deal, you have XP. So once the system is clean, you can restrict the other users so they can't f*** it up as easily.
It will take less time to fix then it will to nuke it. It's your machine, so it's your choice. If you don't set up the correct security, you'll be repeating this process again soon.

This is what I would like you to do:
One of your reports showed Vundo and while Ewido should get it. Let's try this:
Download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Also post a fresh HJT log and tell us how the system is running.

allright classicsoftware, ill get on that right now... but i just wanted to ask something...
right after i made those posts something crazy happened ive never seen before... i went to click on the windows link to go back to the topic list of the forum... when i did that, i suddenly had tons of windows opening up in rapid succession, so fast i couldnt close them, when i would right click and click close group, it would start closing the windows, but only get down to 4-7 windows, and it would start opening them again... it was insane... anyways, ill do what you said now.

hmmm... have done some surfing, seems to be running much smoother, the web browser end of it anyways. gone to quite a few sites and havent had a pop up yet... or seen that damn sys.protect thing...
Vundo still seems to be hanging around...
You have a host of old Java versions...they NEED to be removed, ASAP! At least one version is prone to some nasty infections. Also, once you've uninstalled them, by way of Add/Remove Programs, go to C:\Documents and Settings\(your user account)\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache and dump everything in there (open the cache folder in Explorer, hit ctl-A, then right click on one item and then while holding the shift key hit Delete), then jump up to the AppData folder and select Sun, right click on it, hold down the shift key and select Delete...then repeat for each user account...purging any and all Java caches and deleting them.
Actually, I would remove them all and then once clean reinstall the 1.5.0.7 version.

i would absolutely follow your instructions mjc, but they are a spread a little too thin for me to feel totally comfortable in understanding and doing... im sorry i dont mean to sound like a fool... but i am...
First go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall each and every version of Java you find there...
Then after that is finished, in the Documents and Settings folder find the Application Data folder...it is probably a hidden folder, if you can't find it post back and we'll walk you through the steps needed to get it to show up.

Lets try this:
* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
Post a fresh log and let us know how the system is running....
Yep, after the latest from Classicsoftware, remove all the Java items...including that one for 1.4.2_03...that is the most dangerous/least secure one on there.

You are also going to need VundoFix...
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.

Also Go to Add/Remove Programs and look for WinAntiVirus 2005 Pro and WinFixer or some variation on those names... Choose the option to Remove them...
You may need to run it in each and every user account...or logged in as Admin...or something, it is still there....

I think it will need to be run in Admin account... I had forgotten that it was run earlier...
There is another tool we can use if that doesn't work...
