I get my BIOS screen, My WD IDE HD is detected, as well as my CD-ROM then it proceeds to a black screen with the HD Light on the Front of the Case, solid, no flickering. Out of 20 boot attempts it actually went to my desktop on about 4 trys but with instability. I scanned the disk for errors and tried to defrag, defrag never finished it gets to about 90% and my rig reboots. I did get a couple of disk failure prompts. I tried to boot off windows system disk, but was only successful one time in getting to the windows setup screen. All the other times when I tried to boot off system disk the screen would go black again with the HD lite on the front of my case, constant light on.

If indeed the HD was compromised wouldn't I still be able to boot off the system disk? Is this a motherboard issue? I tried setting the BIOS to optimized settings, still no luck. I also DO NOT overclock this board, which is an ECS N2U400-A nForce2 Ultra. I have 512 system memory, 2 stix, which I also swapped out, trying back stick in front slot, then front stick alone and so forth to no avail.

Im runnin XP Home, Serv Pk II................CPU AMD 2600+ Barton Core. All the fans are engaged, CPU, Vid Card, which is an ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder, Case Fans.

I've done multiple attempts on booting today, just after BIOS comes up and HD is detected it goes black with no other prompts. If I try to boot from system disk it says press any key to continue, but again no video on LCD after I hit any key, just black screen with HD lite on constantly, no flickering.

First check the mobo itself to see if there are any bulging or leaking capacitors.

If not, then get a HD diagnostic program to check out the health of the drive.
If the drive didn't come with this, go to the WD website and download onto a floppy or burn to a CD, then run. Don't forget to change the booting sequence in the BIOS setup to whatever device you're booting from.
