I have M$ office and there is an application that I have allowed to start on start up up until now.(ctfmon)
This is a process which monitors Office and other components.
If I were to disable this on start up would there be any negative effects?
Thanks

I have a little utility that tells what most of the stuff is in Start Up. Here's what it said:
CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features.
If you disable it and there are some negative effects, you can always go back and enable it again.

By the way, if you want that utility it's free. You can get it here http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php#THE_PROGRAMS
When you get there, scroll down to the file start ups.exe and download it. I think you can also get it there in as a zip file.

Interestingly enough, I tried downloading and running that utility but Windows disallowed it considering some kind of security threat or words to that effect.

That's strange because I just now downloaded it. It was an update to the one I already had. I'm running XP Home edition and had no problems.

That database is really out of date... There is an actively maintained one online at CastleCops that you can use to look up most things...
http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html
The reason that some security programs will flag that program as potential malware is because of the names of many of the files in the database...

Well for anyone who wanted to know the outcome of this.
When disabled, there are no ill effects as of yet.
Although it did try to put itself back on start up but that was pretty much it.
It also tried to launch once when I opened word but after that nothing else from it.
Thanks for the replies.
