I have gone onto several forums to try and find a solution to my problem. I have found several that discuss the following problem after the install of IE 5.0 and above:

"This Program has performed an illegal opreation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists , contact the program vendor"

My problem is that I get this message when I try to install IE 5.5 with SP2 onto a Windows 98 machine. The installation halts when it comes to the file called IE_S3.CAB, and the above message occurs. When I click on details, I get the following:

IE55_SP2 caused an exception c0000006H in module IE55_SP2.EXE at 016f:010043ff.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

After looking at several other links, it comes to the basic conclusion that the install media, usually CD is dirty/bad. Or general CD read erors.

How are you trying to install it? From the hard drive or a CD?

If from a CD can you successfully copy the IE install packge from it to the hard drive?

Have you tried to download (http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/5.5_SP2) it?

Is it from an ISP install CD?

I assume you're on 95, hmmm? Or NT 4.0?
