If you dont play games or listen to music, you do not need such a powerful system. A 800MHZ would suffice for what your going to do with your cpu, if you build the cpu your self youll probably save 800 dollars, did you say it was a 1,769. Man thats high but if its a good company with a good rep, then i would get it . But i think there is better deals out there than that , but im not sure you live in canada so i dont really know what a good deal is up there.

It is a company that is building it. I like the fact that it only takes me 10 minutes to drive to the store. The computer is just for my pleasure, but I want one that is not going to fill up too quickly. My laptop is just over 3 years old, has 2 Gigs and it is just about full and only has 32 RAM. I don't want to have to buy another one so soon. Would you all go for the Windows XP or which one? I am not sure about that. Have heard pro and con about that.
Thanks

Windows CE-ME-NT (cement)-windows XP=Extra problems I mean where does it stop It's all in research what one person's preference is there is Really no Best ME is nothing but a 3rd addition 98 probobly the most stable is 2000 but it is still windows and loaded with probs.Thats how they make there money with problems, with out problems you would need no problem solvers ! It's basically a computer food chain . I can bet 75% of the people here do not have first hand experiance with XP, from what I read it is probobly more crash proof than any windows but that is only what i have read.Basically i guess what i'm saying is this is your puter like your car find whatyou like and define it to your personal needs make it what you want it's a machine it is no smarter than the person feeding it imput. Now go out there and get YOU a machine that you desighn and can call your FRIEND http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Boy I need a beer!

PS. IF You don't want your old puter let me know I'm rebuiling old ones for kids that can't afford them SORRY PETE I KNOW THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR THAT Won't happen again.

May I suggest you ask around about Linux? It can be had for free at the public library (usually) and is as stable as it gets. You may need someone who is savvy to set it up, but I guarantee it's at least worth looking into.

I like my old laptop and shall also still use it but I need a bigger screen and just plain "want" a desktop and want to make sure that I get a good machine.
The one I wrote about would be built for me by a store. I has been in business for about 2 1/2 years and seem to be doing well.

Go for it. As you are dealing with someone local. Opposed to a mail order system. The warranty (with a local builder) makes the purchase worthwile.

Also, in two or three years the system could be upgraded a little bit if necessary. An additional hard drive, etc.

The hardware you have listed isn't low-end.

IMHO just have the operating system loaded that you are familiar with using.

Luck.

Thanks for all your answers. When I bought my first computer 3 1/2 years ago I could have had windows 98 (July 1998) but the salesman talked me into Windows 95 saying that there are quite a few bugs in Windows 98. Originally I was supposed to get 98 but when I came to pick up the laptop that I ordered it was loaded with windows 95. I have a feeling it was easier for him to talk me into 95, since it was loaded already. Now I don't want to make the same mistake and get something tha is on the downhill side. Is there anything that you don't like with Windows ME, if I don't go with XP?
thanks, mystified http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I used Windows 98 OEM for a long time about a year ago I tried upgrading to Windows ME and I didn't like it because it wouldn't install and register device drivers and programs correctly I went back to using windows 98. About 2 weeks ago I decided to try it again and so far I haven't had any problems. It seems to be more stable than 98 and supports alot more devices. maybe they have the bugs worked out now. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

ME corrupts every file you put on your PC???? Huh??? No operating system I know of corrupts files...a virus might..magnetic interference from a big speaker might disorganize the data on a hard drive...trying to install a MAC game may well succeed...but not the OS itself...

I don't and won't use ME, but the truth is most of the problems we've seen have come from upgrading an existing installation of Win9x to ME. The full install usually seems to work fairly well. Many people are using it and find it acceptible. The system restore feature eats up a lot of system resources, but can be turned off. Some people don't like the "feature" that puts less often used links in the background, so to speak, and when you click Start\Programs what you see is the more often used applications.

ME itself does not corrupt files, but it is not totally compatible with a lot of software that was commonly used with Win95/98 and usually worked with both. The main reason is the lack of DOS support. That is a major consideration for some people, you may not want to purchase updated versions of most of your software just to be able to run ME. Driver issues were also a problem soon after it was released, but by now most of those issues should be sorted out.

If it were me, I would go with win98, it should work with most of the software you currently run on a win95 machine, ME offers few real advantages over it, and XP is so far new and unproven, not to mention the activation scheme, which theoretically can force the user to be unable to use the same physical copy of XP on the same basic machine after a major upgrade.

Check mjc's topic Cannon Fodder (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000280.html) in PC World, he posted a link to a very informative article about XP that you may want to read if you are considering trying it.

The price is in line for what you have listed. (although, you could build it yourself for much less)...

I would go with win98se, or win2000 pro.

If you really are inclined to get XP, I would get the pro version rather than the 'home'.
