View Full Version : ram
Hi All!
Will my system benefit from more ram, I've read it can slow down systems.
As it is so cheap at the moment I thought i would add more. I've got 256k pc133 cl2 and wanted to add another, this will be my systems max.
Thanks,
kfh.

Howdy
lots of opinions on this....the more games and graphics...more ram is better
here's an link on to much ram http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q253/9/12.ASP
for what it's worth I had 256 in my computer and because it is so cheep I added another 256 which maxed me out. I have a digital camera and do a medium amount of photo editing. With 98SE my computer runs sweet. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

If you are running a machine with a fairly modern motherboard (about three years old or newer) I wouldn't worry too much about slowdowns...if you happen to have an intel 430 chipset then slowdowns will occur if you go higher than 64MB. For all prctical purposes 512MB is the max for a Win9x machine...more than that and you are into all sorts of manual tweaks to get it to run correctly.

MJC:
I know you've said it before, and I've read the MS KB about the more than 512mb problem in Windows, but I gotta tell ya, I've got 768mb of RAM in the wife's machine without so much as a hiccup.
However, I'm of the opinion that what's saving my butt on this, is the fact that I am running a PCI video card. Seems I read somewhere that AGP video cards cause the most problems with the >512mb system.
What say you? Agree? Disagree? Opinions?

Yeah the agp has a problem in 2k, i saw there was a patch for the agp port in 2k, with the amd. I got 2k but no problems, so i dont know. Maybe this could help someone out.

Thanks All!
This my first system which I built six months ago. The mother board is an 815EP.

BB66,
I'd like to know a little bit more about the system...any "tweaks", anything else special, which version of Windows?
Because you are one of the few that hasn't had a problem right out of the box with it. AGP cards can make it worse.
kfh,
Shouldn't have a slow-down problem...most boards that are new will cache more than they are actually capable of holding, and the cache problem is what caused the slow downs.

Using WIN98SE on that UWAVE AZ31 FIC motherboard. No, I haven't limited the amount of memory that Windows can use, or any other tweaks. Well, I take that back. I have set the swap file to a fixed size, on another partition.
I am using the PCI video card. I read somewhere that the >512mb is a bigger issue when using an AGP card. So I thought that must be the reason the system is not choking on 768mb of memory.
Real curious to hear your comments, MJC, as well as anyone else who cares to comment.
If I'm heading for trouble, would like to nip it now. But then, if it ain't broke....

If it has run well so far I think it should continue...the mem proble usually crops up right after the RAM is installed...and goes away when the extra is removed. Yeah the AGP cards can make it worse , but I haven't heard of a PCI card actually preventing it...
I'm kind of curious now, I wonder, if you installed the OS again would your results be the same? Do you have another drive hanging around that you could try it on... that way you don't risk loosing this install, just unplug the drive http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ?
