Having a little problem with my dad's pc.

The four usb ports he has are all usb 1.0. I recently installed a pci adaptor card with 2 usb 2.0 ports. The system is running windoze xp with sp2. The current problem is i am trying to use a adsl modem on it that requires usb 1.1 (min), but for some reason when i plug it into the usb 2.0 port it still won't be detected.

Questions:

1) Is it possible to update usb 1.0 to 1.1, or is it purely hardware-dependent?

2) What issues could there be that would mean the modem won't be detected by the usb 2.0 ports?

The modem is working fine, I know. I can't understand what is wrong with the usb 2.0 adaptor. Sisoft sandra can detect it fine. Could it be a bios issue?

Problem solved.

The usb 2.0 adaptor card was working fine (I confirmed it with some other usb 2.0 devices). The problem lay with the adsl drivers supplied by the company. I used another set of drivers i had, from a different company, but for the same hardware and it is working fine.

And after some research, i believe the answer to question 1 is no.

Until I saw your solution, I was going to ask if you installed the card after installing SP2 as SP2 has usb 2 drivers on it and theyu may have not been installed if the card were not ppresent at the time.

Good that you got it resolved though :)

Correct. The answer to number 1 is no. It's not so much a condition of the ports as much as the USB root hub. Whatever the ports are connected to, that's what USB version they are.
