I am running windows ME with a 866mhz pentium III processor and a 40.0gb hard drive. While I still have lots of space on my hard drive I am thinking of adding a small one I have to load games on. If I do this will I have to load an os on this hard drive or will it work off the one on the main hard drive?

NO.It not neccessary, but why you want to install new one? if you have 40GB is more enough another one may slow down your system's speed. However if you want one more configure it as slave

Adding a second drive to install and load games on is a good Idea.
It isn’t that hard . Just make sure the jumpers on the first drive is set to master and the new is set to slave.( Then run Fidsk on the new drive (use change disk option in Fdisk) and reboot +format)
Ensure that the new drive is as fast or faster than your old drive and it will not cause any Ill effects to your system performance.

Many people use a second drive to store data files , Use as Junk storage and as Temp drivers for virtual memory and or cache files.
It can help reduce the file fragmentation that is all to common under to days operating systems

In addition to the above, when you install the games, change the drive letter that it installs to, to the drive letter of the additional smaller harddrive. That way, most of the game's software will be on the smaller harddrive, but will still have shared files with the OS on the main harddrive.
