Is it possible to duel screen with a laptop and a desktop monitor? If so how would I go abouts doing it?

I do it with mine. Your notebook has an external vga connector right? What brand is the PC? When I connect the external monitor it shows the same as my notebook by default. I have to go to the Windows display setup, select the external monitor, and click "extend my desktop onto this screen" After that, I've got dual screens with independent resolution settings.

The box for "extend my desktop onto this screen" is checked but the screens are both the same. How do I get it so that the screen carries over?'
*edit* I got it I had to click on the 2nd monitor thing and press extend

Try restarting after you check the box. Also, you can drag the pictures of the monitors around to fit your orientation. What laptop is it? With mine, you have to activate the second screen using the hotkey "Fn+F5" for the extended function to work.
