Which one would you buy to protect your PC from viruses? McAfee or Norton?

pretty much both the same thing, run Norton on mine, neighbor runs Mcafee
we decided we ought to throw them both to the curb.

I have been using Nortons Anti Virus for years.

From the days of running my own BBS ( Pre Internet) to today.
I have Never had a virus infect my system..

Not a bad record considering the number of virus and trojans out there..

The Live update feature works great .
The e-mail scan has stopped a number of virus and trojan attacks before they were able to activate. ( Scanning the mail while it is being downloaded)
It has also found and warned me about a number of files from News groups during downloading.

You can get Norton Systemworks Pro 2001 for 15.00 on ebay including shipping. This includes a year of free updates, starting from the time you install it. By this time next year 2002 should be cheap as well. I also run Norton and have never gotten a virus. I keep Norton system doctor running on my home computer with Win Me on it. Win Me seems much more stable with Norton utilities.

Let's see; who has repeatedly saved not only my home system but our PC's at work?
NORTON!

Who has failed to catch some pretty common virii on my neighbor's PC ( and originally installed in my relatives retail systems until i removed it );

MCAFEE! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Or as my nephew calls it: Mac-Crap.

Seriously, I'm with Rick on this one-i've never been infected while using Norton , whereas i've had to use my own rescue disks on relatives systems who had Mcafee installed because it either didn't catch a virus-or it wouldn't completely disinfect it.

But despite which one you decide to buy; any anti-virus program is better than none. Just don't think because you have one you are %100 safe-you still need to take some common sense precautions.

Like DON'T open email attachments from parties you don't know!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Supposedly McAfee new 6.0 version is pretty good. McAfee 4.x and 5.x are what I would expect if fisher-price designed antivirus software... Norton is where I would put my money until i see more solid evidence in regards to McAfee's new version.

TrendMicro is a company that makes pc-illin or some similarlly named product. They also run housecall which is a free online scanner.

I liked InnoculateIT by Computer Associates because it used little in the way of system resources (it was also free for home use). CA still offers virus updates files but is not developing the software any further.

Me being the cheapskate that I am, I run AVG 6.0. Outstanding AV program and it's Free. (Home Version)

Go to www.grisoft.com (http://www.grisoft.com) .

Have tried all the other freebies and trial-versions. They don't compare with AVG.

Luck.

Good point, dog and i agree, for the budget conscious AVG is a good alternative; however an anti-virii program is not the time to skimp on money for your PC, the digital camera can wait!
