Nope, haven't found anything that can touch it. CuteFTP can't come close, and I think is also spyware, seems everything with Cute in the name is. It's probably the next most popular. I've used Bulletproof for 4 years and have no idea how the others stack up. (By the way it was called Bulletproof 4 years ago when I first used it.)

CWS Apps (http://cws.internet.com/ftp.html) has a list of FTP clients and ratings.

thanks Pete Bullet proof has had FTP, but I went looking for G6 (Gene) FTP server and got this:

A rose by any other name...
You may be asking, "Where has Gene6 FTP Server gone?"

Nowhere, it is right here! Gene6 SARL the company behind Gene6 FTP Server have just joined forces with BulletProof Software to bring you BPFTP Server.

The same great product, just a new name and a few new friends to help make the product even greater!

We are very excited for what this means to Gene6 SARL and BulletProof Software and all our customers, past and future.

Drive me to www.bpftpserver.com (http://www.bpftpserver.com)
Don't worry!
Those who registered Gene6 FTP Server are still entitled to a life-time of free upgrades, they should just download BPFTP Server upgrades from now on.
Those who have registered Gene6 FTP Server and who are trialling it are still eligible for the same great

Hey all,

Bear in mind that there are two seprate programs: BPFTP (FTP client - I've been using it for a few years, it's pretty good), and BPFTP Server (an FTP server, no idea how good it is).

Sea, have you tried the FTP server that comes with Windows 2000/XP Pro? I'm sure it doesn't have as many features as BP, but maybe it does what you need?

hi, yes that's where the (tiny bit) of confusion comes into play- I was talking about FTP SERVER.

Gene6 was/is what I am talking about.

now owned by BulletProof.

I had actually set up the native FTP in winXP Pro, but was not happy with it, like most microrsoft initial products it seems somehow "unfinished"- or was it that I just didn't take the time to learn it?

I use WuFTP on Linux. It's free and ,if you keep up to date on releases, secure. (knock on wood)

Only problem with BPFTP is that it is not free for new registrants. I use Leech FTP which is free and does for all my needs.

Sea: thanks for clearing that up, I didn't catch the SERVER part first time through, thought you were referring to the Bulletproof FTP client I've used for a long time. The server version is a different animal, I know nothing about it.

After looking through the page I posted last night, the best two client options other than bulletproof would seem to be WS_FTP or Leech. MOst of the others are spyware. Cute definitely is, same for Get Right, 3D-FTP says in the CWS write up that it contains Aureate/Radiate Adware components, I don't know anything about the others. Couldn't find any of them on the Tom Cat Spyware List (http://www.tom-cat.com/spybase/spylist.html) though.

I think Leech may be the one I tried long ago, never got it to connect to anything, but I might not have had it configured corectly. I knew next to nothing about computers or FTP at that time. (before win98, ME, 2000 or XP existed) Come to think of it I didn't know how to install a driver...Used Cute then too, and got it to work but not well...

sorry guys, I wasn't more specific- the G6 (now bulletproof) is a program I ran into about a year ago.

Speaking of WuFTP. Would you believe that PacBell.net uses an extremely old version of WuFTP on their servers, and an academic BETA version at that!?!? PacBell happens to be my ISP and has a very large customer base, so I find it inconceivable that they use such an old FTP server with known vulnerabilities. About a year ago, I sent them two or three emails pointing out the known bugs in the version they were using (and which they're still using to this day) and gave them the WU-FTPD Development Group (http://www.wu-ftpd.org/) link where they could download the latest version for free. I even downloaded it myself and emailed it to them! Never heard a word back, so I even called their technical support on the telephone a couple of times but never got any results. Here is the log-in prompt when I start to log into PacBell's FTP server as of today:

Connected to home.pacbell.net.
220 php-w1 FTP server (Version wu-2.4.2-academ(23) Wed Jun 2 14:27:55 PDT 1999) ready.

Can you believe it!!! The Washington University FTP Vulnerabilities (http://www-arc.com/sara/cve/WUftpd_vulnerabilities.html) site clearly states: "Any server running the versions prior to (and including) December 1998 of ..., Wuarchive ftpd ([b]2.4.2-academ[BETA-18]), wu-ftp 2.6.1(1), OpenBSD 6.4, or IAX Version 4.3 are vulnerable to exploit."

I guess it's going to take someone hacking into their computers to get them off their duffs and upgrade the thing. It would be a heck of a lot easier to upgrade now, than to reconstruct their databases after someone erases them - Oh, well.
