Try choose "The recently known good configuration" in the boot up list.
By the way, did you install any software or drivers recently?

What is the exact error message it is giving you?

Hm, well, if you have nVidia drivers, chances are it might be the nv4.dll infinite loop bug... If that's the case, it should mention that file somewhere on the blue screen of death you're seeing.
To remedy that problem, (if that is indeed the problem) simply boot into safe mode with networking by holding F8 and selecting that as your compy boots up, and then go to guru3d.com to get the latest nVidia forceware.
Since you make it sound as if this happened seemingly randomly while Windows was loading, the problem I just desrcibed is quite probably the one you're having. nVidia drivers suck, and they randomly get corrupted, it would seem. This kind of crap has happened to me at the worst possible times in many instances. x_x
Anywho, hope I could be of help.

The fixes in the following link are rather complex...
Black startup screen is briefly displayed and your computer restarts repeatedly when you try to start Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314466/en-us).
Probably easier to do this...
XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option (http://www.informationweek.com/windows/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189400897).
