Hey, no bad news (for a change).
I ran the XP upgrade from ME yesterday. The only change, installation, addition I made. The CPU (1.4G TBird) is now running almost 20F cooler than it ever has. Used to idle at 104F, now idles at 86F. Moderate load used to run at 110F, now runs at 91F. I am also finding that significantly more RAM is logged as available by various utilities.
No significant change in ambient air conditions, either.
Anybody else notice anything like that? Does XP reduce the CPU workload/duty cycle that much? Just curious...
Hi not_fred!
I see you upgraded from me to xp didn't no you could do that. I up graded from 98 to me can I now upgrade to xp or is that pushing my luck a bit.
kfh.
Sounds like an unsung benefit?
I bet that it does reduce the workload (especially over ME or the 9x kernel in general)...I've seen reports of going to 2k doing similar things (the NT kernel is more efficient in the way it manages the system) so it kind of makes sense.
Yes, kfh, you could do it that way but I think you might be pushing your luck...

I had the advantage of it being a brand new ME installation - had not had time to go sour. New mobo, new hd's, relatively few file associations. Most of the posts in these forums will pretty strongly recommend that you start from scratch. In my case, if it went (goes) wrong, its relatively little hassle to start again from the bottom.
So far, so good, and the temperature seems to be holding through the day in a variety of conditions.

Alright who messed it up this time!
Hi All!
I built my first system 6 months ago. I split the HD to C drive & D drive can I add another partition now and as you say dual boot, or is it to late.
Or will I have to format the C drive to Add XP. What is the advantage of having a dual boot system.
Thanks,
kfh.

which version of XP did you upgrade to? i have ME now, and if temps get lowered that much, i'll consider upgrading.

I up'd to the home version. However, I'd still consider the temp reduction to be speculative...what we used to call "anecdotal data" (see note, below). There have to be more effective ways you could spend 100US to reduce your CPU temps.
I am having a couple of stability problems...possibly associated with Win2k drivers being used for my Epson scanner (1640SU). May have to roll back the installation...
"below": I used to know several NASA flight directors who's motto was "In God We Trust...All Others Bring Data". IMHO, I brought no data worth your 100US.
