Ok, it's come to my attention ( via MS no less ) that anyone running an , how shall i politely say it; an " evaluation " version of XP pro/home with the PID of { FCKGW-RHQQ2...}, SP1 won't install on XP systems using that leaked Volume License Key, it will also disable WindowsUpdate on those systems.

Just a little fair warning that sometimes service packs don't just fix problems, they cause them. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

hehe- yeah, but who really wants the ENTIRE SP??

only parts of it are applicable to individually addressed problems on individual machines.

and then, one could still get ANY "critical" updates from other sources (http://www.windowsxp.nu/)

the same way that we do NOW, for win98 or anything else.

this is no biggie.

and for real- the way winXP works as it is, is so SUPERIOR to anything else I have tried from M$, it doesn't need any 'updates'

Details here:

As the article points out, there are other keys that likely will be affected...however, there is a way to change the PID after installation in case you used an affected one...

As the saying goes, the more you overtinker the machine, the more problems you create.

Oh yeh, there ar ways & ways around their " fix ", and i'll bet you a cup of coffee that within a week or less of the service pack's release someone will have " patched " it so that it works just as well on the " volume " PIDs as on other PIDS.

The update part is a simple fix-it's simply a registry entry that directs window's towards a different update site-all you have to do is change it back to the v4 one it currently uses.

Or , you can get any updates you need from MS themselves at the corporate IT download site.

Sorry, Bill-you've been raping the PC industry too long for anyone to seriously consider running with the pack now. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
