My recommendation: do everything for her.
When i bought my computer last year, i did all the research for pricesa and brands, and then i offered to chip in some money, got some from my dad, AND bought it the day after thanksgiving the get the good discounts.
I highly recommend the shopping the same day i did, the computer price was cut in half to $500.
