Hey,

My sister just phoned to say she has a £14.99 charge from Window's Update on her Visa bill. Now I don't know what she has done and she claims to have just entered her visa details for ebay, but has anyone else seen this or know where it could come from? I tried my hardest to preach about using the anti-spyware and anti-virus programs I installed, but for some ignorance seems easier.

I would STRONGLY suggest that she contact MS - her credit card comapny & Ebay about this. She has been swindled. First to contact is her credit card company and then MS and then Ebay

MS does not charge for updates.

They might charge for UPGRADING a program but as far as I know they would never charge a low figure of £15.00 for any of thier programs.

A quote from this site - microsoft.com/technet (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/updatemanagement/windowsupdate/default.mspx).

"Windows Update and Microsoft Update are two updating services offered by Microsoft that deliver these updates at no charge. Both services determine which software updates are applicable to a given computer, and can download and install them automatically."

Get that card stopped immediately.
As pointed out, update is free - no charges should be levelled from M$.

Contact Ebay so they can jump on whoever took the money (if it was done through them)

Most swindles are under £25 - they are set at that level so most users don't notice them. Whenever anything like this happens, you MUST contact the card issuer in order to prevent further fraud - if anything happens then you are liable if it happens after you have noticed a problem.

The card issuer can also look for similar transactions on other users accounts from the same source, and this can help track down the culprit and give them the well deserved kicking they require.
