I help with computers at my kids school. I have 2 computers, one with an ECS P4S5A and the other with an ECS K7S5A. On both when they boot up, is the says the battery is low, so I put a new one in. Now both go through boot up until they try and read the HDD. I get "A disk-read error has occured." I know the hard drive is fine because I hooked it up to a computer which works and it booted on than one just fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Go into the BIOS and check the boot order. I bet that it was reset when you replaced the battery. Also check all the drive options, making sure that the drives are actually detected...set the detection option to Auto.

The HDD is being detected, and I changed the boot order to the HDD first.

I've changed the IDE ribbon. Could the IDE-1 socket go bad? Would it still see the drive but not be able to access it?

Is there some other BIOS setting?

Thanks.

In general terms, you want to access your drives in LBA mode. Make sure your BIOS setup hasn't defaulted to some obsolete sector addressing mode like "normal/CHS", or "large". Also, what kind of drive it is? If it's a pre-2000 drive, it may not deal with UDMA well. Almost all new-ish BIOSes default to this transfer mode, so this could well be the source of your problems.
