Hi,

I have a computer here with some peculiar problems. I can ping websites, but my browsers (IE and Mozilla) won't open them. Neither will they access my router's web-based setup. Also can't get any return info on a tracert.

In addition, the Windows firewall is off and its corresponding ICS service can't be restarted. When attempting to restart the service via services.msc I get "error 10047: An address incompatible with the requested protocal was used."

I've performed virus and spyware scans that turned up no viruses and a handful of "medium-risk" spyware. All have been removed.

Any help is much appreciated. I've read several post on the firewall issue, but have gotten nowhere.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums....

Download a copy of Hijackthis (http://www.subratam.org/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=41)

Unzip the program to a permanent folder.

Run the program.

Choose the option to scan and create a log.

Post the contents of the log here for review.

Actually, I've just found a solution.

http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20050508_windows_firewall_error_10047.html

Reseting the Windows LSP (Layered Service Provider). This worked. Now my firewall is back up and my browsers work.

Thanks

I'm sure it did. But the main reason the LSP stack is disrupted is spyware. My original recommendation stands. Unless you are 100000% sure you are spyware free, and HJT log is still indicated.

Once I regained internet access, I was able to further update my anti-spyware and remove even more spyware. Everything seems to be working fine.

Thanks

Whatever. You do as you please. If you want to know if you rid yourself of the problem, post a log, otherwise you are wasting our time.

Classic is right, if you don't fix the underlying problem it will happen again.
