Ok, now my stupidity is about to show. I've made several postings in this discussion arena and I must be dense or something...HELP !!!

I read this article http://www.regstevens.co.uk/build.htm and what I got out of it was that I wanted to pursue the Socket 478 P4 technology along with the VIA Apollo PX4266 Chipset. Somewhere along the way I got confused.

I have two questions:

1. Is the VIA Apollo PX4266 Chipset the CPU or the Motherboard or something totally different?

2. Depends on the answer to question #1. If it's the CPU then I need to purchase a MoBo that supports Socket 478 & 400Mhz FSB, correct? If it's the MoBo then I need to purchase an Intel P4 Socket 478 processor? If it's neither then what the Hell do I do?

I'm really trying to understand this stuff, but I'm old and need some guidance from the ones that know...I am dedicated to this so I will not let this stop me.

Thanks

VIA makes chips that are integrated into your motherboard (often called "CMOS") or the brain of the motherboard, Socket 478 would be the type/size (kinda like a shoe size) of processor that will fit in the m-board, and the 400mhz FSB would be the speed that the motherboard processes the processor commands on the front side of each request.
I hope I have everything in order, and I hope this helps you out.

Thanks j_sanborn.

I went to the VIA site and it seems that they provide links to Mobo manufacturers that include the P4X266 Chipset. I bought the Shuttle AV40 and it has the chipset I needed. Now I need to purchase an Intel P4 Socket 478 CPU.

I'm looking at the 1.7 or 1.8Ghz versions on www.pricegrabber.com (http://www.pricegrabber.com) and www.newegg.com. (http://www.newegg.com.) Gonna run me $200+ for either. Looking for a site that may have better prices if anyone knows of one.

Pricewatch.com is a good place for checking prices, but several of the vendors are less than good. (Resellerratings.com is/was a good site, but they changed ownership and comments haven't been updated for many weeks now.)

For a combination of price and service, I don't know of anyone better than Newegg.
