Hello, folks.
I'm trying to clean up my 80 GB Maxtor HDD, and noticed a strange thing. The C: partition is 35GB, and WinXP shows 17.5 GB free, which means about the same amount used, 17GB +/-. But I added up all the files and folders, and I only come up with 10 GB used, which should leave me about 25GB free. Norton disk analyzer also shows half the drive used, half free. What happened to my other 7 or 8 GB?

I've got my hidden files shown, so I should be able to see everything when I'm adding them up. There's nothing in the recycle bin. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Thanks

How many user accounts are on the machine? Have you checked each one individually? Is Fast User Switching enabled? Hibernation? System restore?

Where is the pagefile located? How big is it?

Use ExplorerXP (http://www.explorerxp.com/) to find out what's really being used.
How much is in the Recycle Bin?
Remember...everything in there is still using space.

Thanks for the suggestions, everybody. I downloaded ExplorerXP, and it found the problem: The missing 8.37 GB was in System Volume Information. Next question: When I had checked System Volume Information before, in Windows Explorer, it said, "folder is empty" instead of showing me the real size. How come? Is that one of those "idiot-proofing" measures? (I thought I had System Restore turned off, since it usually doesn't work anyway! That's all System Volume Information is used for, right?)
