A quick search at www.tucows.com (http://www.tucows.com) and I could only find one free player, Free DVD 2.0

The way I understand it, WMP will play DVDs only if you have a decoder installed on your system. If you have any other DVD playback software installed, then you have a decoder. If you use WMP to play DVDs, it just uses the decoder from the other software.
If you have not installed any other DVD software, or any decoders, WMP should not play DVDs. Something to do with licensing. This is the same reason that to play DVDs on the X-Box you have to buy the add-on decoder pack.

You are most likely correct hired-
here's what I did, I went and got Power DvD (http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/products/product_main.jsp?ProdId=28)- (trial) installed it, then I noticed when I inserted a DVD, WMP wanted to connect to 'update'.
Generally I refuse this request, I checked to see what component it was trying to install and it was some dvd codecs.
works is all I know.
stills works although the trial is over.

Heh, that's cool...does powerdvd still work or just WMP? That's an interesting way to work around the whole issue since the decoder is a separate part of the software and likely wouldn't be affected by the trial of powerdvd...
