I am trying to fix an old IBM Aptiva model 2140-L61 running Win98 for a single mom who would like to use it for her kids to access the internet. I have everything working except for sound. The sound card is integrated on the board and nowhere can I find what kind of drivers it needs for windows. I've been to the IBM and Lenovo web sites and they do not list this model. I've tried driver detective and it does not list the sound card at all when I do a scan.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try sign up a account in www.driverguide.com and search the needed driver.Actually driver searching can be done over general internet searching. That's mean just type the driver name in the search bar in the yahoo or google website.

Are you sure about the model number ?

It should have an ESS sound chip in it

Can you read the sound chip numbers on the mother board ?
That would help

In device Manager...
Are there sound devices shown, or are there "Other Devices" with yellow "!" shown?
e.g Here below, are mine shown "By Connection" under the "PCI Bus".

If neither are showing in Device Manager...
Has the onboard sound been disbled in the BIOS's configuration settings?

If all PCI hardware is in place, and [especially onboard sound] enabled, has the ESCD been "Force Updated" ["Reset Configuration Data : Enabled", then "Save & Exit Setup"] to make bootup resource provision for all of it?

What it looks like when the driver is properly installed and working.
[Don't know if I'm telling you something you already know. ]
