Any opinions on a good software buy for restore, saving, modifying etc existing and new photos?
I've been looking at Adobe Photo Shop Elements and Paint Shop Pro 7...both running about the same price. Looking to get my mother into doing her thing instead of asking others. She's interested in learning.
I've seen several progs out there like MS Picture It(std & deluxe), PhotoSuite (couple diff ones) and on and on.
I was looking at the first 2 (Elements & Paint Shop) cause they have so much more capabilities and I like the animation thingy as well (I get to use it).
So any suggestions from experiences? Much appreciated http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I love PSP been using it since ver 3 (but must admit I have not had time to take in the new features of 7). Basic photo editing is intuitive and easy to learn. Assuming Mom is 40 or above, I will offer my dear hubby (65 and former COMPUPHOBIC) as a testimonial! He can scan, crop, sharpen, resize, compress for web use, and export as a jpg.
Another plus for learning PSP are the PSP Interactive Zone (http://www.pspiz.com/) and the PSP Users Group (http://www.pspug.org/). Both have OODLES of information, message board, and FRIENDLY people of all ages and user levels.
I've not tried Adobe Photo Shop Elements so have no comment on it pro or con.
Wish Mom luck from this Mom and you enjoy that Animation Shop if she lets you near the machine http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thank you, CCmouse! I hadn't found those PSP forums..way cool!
bassvax: I bought PSP 6 because I wanted something to grow into. When I first bought it, the manual was 80% Greek! Now, I am down to maybe 10% to 15% of the manual that I have yet to translate into words I understand. So, it is a bit complex in the beginning but it is definitely worth the learning, and you can do so much more with PSP or Adobe than you can do with a program like PhotoSuite that there is just no comparison. Need to fix a badly degraded family pic? You can do that. Want to do something totally fancy and unique with a family photo? You can do that. Want to make a greeting card that is completely your own creation? You can do that. Or Web graphics, or jpegs, or flyers..and on and on.
Gonna stop...this is my area of passionate enthusiasm..but would absolutely recommend going with either PSP or the Adobe (sorry, don't know anything about Adobe, but supposed to be the premier). And not going to bore you with some technical details...like the fact that you cannot change resolution in the PhotoSuite Deluxe that I was helping a friend with...that's not good, trust me. And I have helped the same friend with several other "basic" photo editing programs..and most of them lack a Print Preview! Or the ability to put your "test" print wherever you want to put it on the page so that you don't end up printing it "centered" and waste a lot of paper.
Okay, so I didn't stop like I said I would and "concise" isn't my best thing. I recommend PSP...spend a wee bit more money now, and your mom will be able to do so many more things AND you won't have to spend the money later because I doubt that she will ever totally master all the possibilities. Rick and others, though, have said that Adobe needs more resources than PSP..so that might factor into your decision between the two depending on your mom's puter.

As a Photoshop 6.0 user I would recommend it, however it take time to learn, you need a good pc with loads of memory (dont believe the min requirements) and a bit more cash.. The version you are looking I assume is a cut down, I also run Photoshop Lite on my laptop (it crashes if I load up a couple of large images, need some more ram!!) and I will say it does offer some good functions. It has an easy to use interface that allows newer users to get on with jobs easily and not spend time reading the manual.. You can get a free 30 day trial on the adobe sit so why not give that a go before you buy??

Ulead Photoimpact 7 is another good one but it is not as easy to use as JASC Paint Shop Pro 7 I have them both and use PSP more often for photos. Photoimpact is better for web images. Correl Draw is suposed to be a good one but it is expensive $549 (don't have it can't afford it). I think PSP 7 is the best at a reasonable price (more bang for the buck)

I think you made an excellent choice, bassvax. If your mom has access to the Net, I learned far more from tutorials on PSP than I learned from the book. Some really "easy to follow" tutorials on just about everything one wants to do. If she doesn't have access, you may need to print up some of them for her...wish I could loan her my "pile" of printed tutorials. If I can help with anything, email me. And I hope that she gets as much pleasure from it as I have. You're a good son! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
