I have a rather big problem and could do with some help regarding it. I have 8mb broadband which up until a few days ago has been working perfectly. It usually connects at around 4.5-6mb which is fine for me. Well now it's connecting at the same speed but when downloading or surfing the Web it doesn't reflect this.
I can not get my download speeds to go faster than 10kb/s and half the time it hovers around between 3-5kb/s. I HAVE been downloading at around 200-250kb/s so I'm not sure what has gone wrong. I would really appreciate as much help as I can get with this as I'm sure you can understand, it is beginning to be a BIG pain.

This is somewhat likely to be a provider issue rather than your PC. What internet provider are you using, what type service?
When did it slow down?
Who is your ISP?
When does it happen (all the time, certain parts of the day, etc)?
What kind of downloads? (If it is file sharing type downloads, there is a good chance that you've been capped. A lot if ISPs are capping the typical file sharing ports.)
Have you tried any online speed tests...like the one at speakeasy.net?

When did it slow down?
- Slowed down a few days ago for some reason
Who is your ISP?
- I live in the UK so it's BT Yahoo!
When does it happen (all the time, certain parts of the day, etc)?
- All the time
What kind of downloads? (If it is file sharing type downloads, there is a good chance that you've been capped. A lot if ISPs are capping the typical file sharing ports.)
- ALL Downloads from every site. Even browsing is slow
Have you tried any online speed tests...like the one at speakeasy.net?
- I tried a speedtest and my downstream speed came back as 128kb/s which should NOT be right for an 8mb connection

Someone posted a similar problem a week or so ago. It turned out to be his firewall causing slow down. have you tweaked a firewall setting?

I've got BT Yahoo! and I am experiencing the same problem as you. My download speed is around 14kb/s. I can't even play online games because its extremely slow. I've tried many reliable sources such as UK university servers and microsoft.
My firewall is not on.
I'm tired of ringing them and extremely unhappy with the service.
Did you get your problem sorted out? and if yes, how?

There was no problem from the ISP and the cable connection issue when this happened to me. Replacing a modem solved it. But the problem may or may not happen with the same modem. Try power off or unplug the power code on the modem and router for some time. I did with 20 minutes and power them up again and the speed was up to normal high speed. I guess the modem has to be discharged after a period but I have no conrfirmation from any source.
