I'm sure others will come up with some replies,
there seems to be lots of 'flavours' of linux, it's knowing which is best to go for.

My suggestion is for you to just go to your local book store and purchase one of those " Linux for Dummies " books ( no offense inttended http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif ) or SAM's teach yourself "whatever" in 24 hours books.
Then just put it on an old PC you have ( or a seperate partition ) and begin playing with it. Getting your hands into it is the best way to learn, and there are literally 100's of sites out there for the experianced/newbie UNIX learner ( Linux is a flavor of this old/powerful OS ), here's one to get you started.

so having no particular use (currently) for linux, and just wanting to learn and mess about with it, (possibly to find a purpose for it later) which version to choose? or build ones own? and then where to d/l or better, get a CD (rather than the long d/l)

Hey Jude, (sounds like a song!!)
I've been interested in the comments on linux for a while, and would like to try it (even left a partition spare on my hd for it)
but there seems to be a lot of different versions, and I've just read (from one of the links above) about setting up ones own basic setup, but I (and am sure other interested parties) would value input from current users, as to which option to go for.
I've seen the stack of d/l's, but for those of us on dial up a better option would be CD (I'm sure they are available)

For a beginner, I'd suggest Mandrake. Others who are deeper into Linux might suggest others, like Suse.
www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org) is a place to start looking for downloads. www.filemirrors.com (http://www.filemirrors.com) is another.

Personally i use Suse's distro-and i also like mandrake & Redhat. I second the above suggestion that you start with Mandrake, as it's just about as Linux-idiot proof as they come.
Not trying to be mean. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
The best place i've found to get a Distro if you're , shall we say " crippled " by your net connection ( http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ) is your local large retail bookstore-or PC store.
Last time i looked CompUSA carried not only several versions of Redhat, Mandrake, and Suse-but also had some good manuals on them .
I get mine from FTP sites, but i have looked at the Suse public personal distro at CompUSA, and i'd have to say that for $40 or less, it's a heck of a deal for all that you get.
Sure not gonna find a MS OS { and various Office type apps } for under $100!

Vic: Any idea how much it would cost to ship 3 CD's to you from the states? Drop me an email if you wanna discuss working something out (I have no intention of trying to profit here).

Hi Pentachris,
many thanks for the offer, but last night I ordered 'mandrake' from here
http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk/halfprice.html
which I found by following the links above, it is version 8 for £16 inclusive of vat & postage, which I thought was a good deal. is this similar to what you were offering to send?
I have a spare partition but I remember seeing somewhere that it has to be 'converted' for linux. I suppose that will be in with the documentation, but will keep you posted.

John,
I seem to have taken over your post here, but I think with all the above help, you have (like me) got some good info & some places to start.

I was just going to burn you copies of the 3 cd's that I used to install Mandrake 8.2 (downloaded from the net). I guess that's the same as
and in addition you'll get the 3 binary download CDs of Linux Mandrake 8.2.
that I saw at the website you referred to. I guess what that means is that they're selling you 8.0 and 8.2, but only tech support for 8.0. (?)
You can use utilities on cd 1, from within Windows, to make the boot floppy it referred to. Also, all the features listed under "the standard box set gives you:" are standard on the download discs.
It's nice, though, that you get the 360-or-whatever page user guide. I like instructions on paper. It makes me happy. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Good luck! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Jude3085: We did kinda take over from you here, didn't we? If you don't have a fast connection & cd burner, and you're interested in Mandrake 8.2, drop me an email. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
