I know NOTHING about HTML web-publishing, but I want to take advantage of the free webspace my ISP has provided me. Are there any good HTML editors designed for morons like me who know nothing about publishing? I downloaded the much-praised 1st Page 2000, but even that seems complicated to me. I need a program that assumes I know NOTHING and treats me like the idiot I am. Seriously though, any good basic HTML editors you'd suggest?

Sheesh, Jericho, first off I feel compelled to address your self-inflicted "dunce" mentality! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
There is a difference between ignorance and stupidity (e.g. I didn't realize someone had used the stove and it was still hot, ouch! v.s. Look at the heat waves coming off that stove...I wonder how hot it really is, ouch!) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
A genious IQ professor I had once said: "Average folks differ academically in two ways; degree of interest and method of learning!" Consider the subjects in school you had little or no interest in learning, versus the ones you really enjoyed or wanted to pursue. The learning curve accelerates when we are "interested" in learning. The second point has to do with by whom we are being taught along with their method. And, accompanying that, techniques for studying...learning effective ways to memorize...using things like acrostics (e.g. HOMES for remembering the names of the Great Lakes), and various ways of visualizing (e.g. imaging a cartoon to remember key points).
I digress! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I would venture out on a limb here and say because you have a desire/interest to learn this...you will do well! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

You might want to start with a What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) HTML editor. A good list is Here (http://www.wdvl.com/Vlib/Authoring/HTML_Editors.html). Also check to see if you have Front Page Express installed, it's installed along with some versions of IE.
Check any Freeware/Shareware programs you might download on a good Spyware list, the Tomcat List (http://www.tom-cat.com/spybase/spylist.html)is a pretty good one, or search for spyware on Google (http://www.google.com).

You can download Front Page Express here (http://www.uct.ac.za/depts/its/webdesign/build/install.htm). It is satifactory for my needs. I tried 1st Page, but I just didn't find it as easy as FPE.

I learnt on Dreamweaver after finding Frontpage a nightmare to use properly and now that I make sites professionally I still use it for a percentage of my work. It is brilliant but quite difficult to learn, the turorials are quite useful. Its a bit of a struggle to get going but once u learn the basics the rest comes quickly
for a trial version (although i warn u its 48.17 mb and u need at least a p300 with 96mb ram to run it) look here (http://www.macromedia.com).
but then again I did go on an evening course in advanced web design for a year...

I know I'll catch a lot of flack for this but here goes:
I do a dozen or so Internet sites and 3 Intranet sites, all in FrontPage. I had my first site up and online in 3 days, and most of that was getting content not design. That first site was using a full featured limited (120 days back then) download (30MB - ouch) with no manual, just the useless help file. However, I found it intuitive and it allowed me to get up and running without knowing all the features. Since then, I have learned to add coding (Java, Javascript, ASP) and online databases - including a Snitz forum.
I have been with PCs since the early 80's and used to enjoy DOS and self-taught BASIC, progressing to VB after Windows came along. I just wasn't interested in learning & programming in HTML at the time - I was in a hurry. Not everyone cares for FrontPage, but it fit the bill for my situation and still meets most of my needs. I especially like the file management and site reports that are built in. MS is not my favorite software vendor for many reasons, but they seemed to have newbies in mind with room for more experienced webmasters. And like it or not, if you use MS Office, nothing else comes close to compatibility with the Office products.

I agree that FrontPage has a very good file managment system. Eutychus, have u tried dreamweaver, I used frontpage for a month before moving to dreamweaver and I was amazed by the power of it. U should give it a try if u havent. What have u got to lose.
