hi huys,
I was thinking to upgrade my mobo. The point is if I should go for a SDRAM mobo or DDR. DDR is faster and cheap but I am not hering any particular comment regarding it. Many people have still SDRAM and I was wondering if ALL new mobos produced are really only DDR. Are SDRAM mobos still manufactured? is DDR a just momentary fashion? what you think that the future will be for SDRAM?
thanks

Yes they still produce sdram board, but im sure they will faze them out sooner or later. One thing is ddr costs like 10 more dollars over sdram.
So i would go for ddr, youll see a signficant improvement also. And ddr is better on the overclocking style also, if your into that.

A good friend once told me never to worry about obsolescence. When you buy your computer, it already is.
Here is a question with some really long answers. I have a cd-rom drive I bought in '95 which still works flawlessly and I use it to this day. The folks who bought rambus ram are having entirely different thoughts by now, I suspect.
To sort of answer your question, I think sdram is already outdated, but far from obsolete. I use it, I'm about to add more, but if I were to buy a new mobo, I would upgrade to ddr. DDR is not a momentary fashion (like rambus, or slot processors) but it is showing signs that it is the new standard.
I'm sure someone is about to disagree.

Well, here comes my problem. I would like to add more sdram to my PC and also the CPU but both are going to be "old". CPU MUST be 200MhZ FSB and mobo uses SDRAM. Kinda annoying the idea to to spend money for something I am not going to be able to use in my "next" mobo. Mobo are all 266FSB and use DDR. So I was thinking to upgrade motherboard.

As long as we can buy 256 MB DDR Ram for less than $60......who cares?

Standards are changing so fast right now for Mboards, CPU's, RAM, a person would probably be just as well off to sit tight for a while and let the smoke clear. Trying to stay current, you'd have to upgrade as often as you change your underwear.
There are nice Mboards available for upgrading that will support 200/266 CPU's and SDRAM or DDR all on the same board. And they also support the XP processor.
As for DDR if you are planning to really hang things to the wall then you will see about a 10 percent advantage. IMHO DDR isn't all it's cracked up to be unless you are into heavy graphic situations. Or heavy server stuff. DDR on a Video Card will give a gain like that on a benchmark.
I've got SDRAM that I'll match against any stick of DDR for overclocking uses. Have some PC150 SDRAM that will take whatever you throw at it with the FSB.
The 200 series chips and SDRAM are a long way from becoming stepchildren. Too much of each out there in use.
Luck.
