I have a soyo sy-6ba+iv motherboard and i need to replace the pIII 500 cpu. I wouldnt mind spending a little extra on a larger cpu (maybe over 1g) but in the manual it says that it is only compatible with cpu's up to 600mhz. Is this true?

Hey,
If the motherboard manual says the maximum is 600Mhz, then that is the maximum.
My advice is to go ahead and get the 600Mhz cpu and then spend that extra money that you haven't spent yet on more RAM.
Quite frankly, once you get over about 500Mhz-750Mhz, you can't really tell much of a difference in speed. However, I should qualify that statement by saying the you will see an improvement when it comes to heavy duty processing, but don't expect to see your programs opening that much faster and so on.
For example, I just got a new P4 1.7GHz system at work, but for normal routine stuff, I can't see that much of a speed improvement over my Athlon one giggers here at home.
