View Full Version : Win XP stuff
Can someone tell me about Win XP? I am considering the upgrade. What is the difference between home and profesional? Besides the price, I mean.
Also, I am curious about the piracy protection plan it uses. As I understand it, the program detects your hardware so more than one computer can't use it. Does that mean that in order to use XP you must register?

What’s the difference between these two cokes? That’s right. One has calories, the other doesn’t. They’re both Coke, one just has fewer FEATURES, kind of like the difference between Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro. The Home version is cheaper, but it has fewer features than the Pro version. For instance, Pro has a really neat Remote Desktop program (similar to PC AnyWhere) that allows you to control another person’s PC. Home doesn’t. Pro can take advantage of computers with multiple processors. Home can’t. There are other features, but in a nutshell, here’s what to do. For your PC at work, get Pro and for your computer at home, get , well Home. Here’s another factor to consider: The XP Home upgrade runs about $100, while the XP Pro upgrade is $200.
And yes you must register

Yes, you must register XP or it will quit working after 30 days. However, everyone claims that no privacy info is sent to Microsoft.
It's up to you if you want to believe them. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif I will say that the laptop that I have with XP seems to be much more stable. ALso you will run into compatability problems with some of your software. I would check very carefully before upgrading to see if there would be any problems with drivers or programs. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

You have to activate, but you do not have to register...
An interesting thing to note, however, is that when programs crash in XP (yes, it happens, despite the flying man commercials and the Madonna song) an error reporting program starts...this program, if you choose to send an error report, will send info to M$ about the error and other info like your !license information! and possibly other personal info (and this is just what it admits to sending))
So anybody who happens to have a corporate bootleg had better be careful not to send error reports, lest Bill come a knockin...
